What kind of sound card?

I have a compaq presario 7594 qith a celeron processor, 256 mb ram and windows 98. I can't, for the life of me, get the sound to work. I've tried reinstalling the drivers with no success as, per my topic in drivers. So i'm pretty much giving up on the drivers and trying a new option. I want to install a new sound card. I believe a new card comes with it's own drivers. Now the question is, what kind of inexpensive sound card can I but that will fit my system?

 

When installing drivers it shows a error that its not working properly in device manager? If it shows its working ok, have you made sure all your connections (power/audio) are good and no rips in the cords anywhere. Or another set of speakers that are known to be good? And have you made sure in control panel that the speakers are not muted and using the preferred device? In multimedia.

If you do get another sound card you first need to know if you can use PCI or ISA and are the slots free for a sound card. Then you can find one upon that. For a machine like that you could get away with a creative soundblaster 128 or 512 if they still sell them. If you have a computer shop around you that sell used parts that would be a good way to pick up cheap card. If it doesn't have the Drivers with it though you will need to make sure the card has either a Model number that checks out or a FCC number to find the drivers on the internet.
