    Hi Everyone!

    I hope I'm posting in the right Forum....if not, please put it where it should be;
just let me know where to find the answers! THANKS :)

I have a Toshiba Satellite A-135 Laptop that I use ONLY for playing PC games; browsing the Internet (I use either Firefox 3.5 or IE-7); and for e-Mail(I use IncrediMail...I do NOT use Outlook or Outlook Express).

I recently added 1 GB of RAM, and now I have the maximum 2.2 GB that this laptop will support.

My problem is that my Toshiba runs slower than molasses, and I'd like to go to
Add/delete and get rid of ALL Microsoft "clutter" that I don't need so that my
games run at the fast speed that they were designed to run!!

I DON'T use MS Office; MS Student; etc., etc. As far as I know, I ONLY use
Internet Explorer, but I'm afraid to delete anything in case IE is dependent on
something. I'm not experienced enough to know what's safe to get rid of, so I knew just where to go to get answers from PC experts....Majorgeeks!!

Will you tell me what MS "stuff" is safe to delete considering that I only use
Internet Explorer 7? I truly only use it for the 3 things listed above.

Thank you in advance for any and all suggestions...It will be nice to play my games at the speed they were intended!!)

    Gratefully,
    Nuts4Mutts :)

    Hi Everyone!

To Dacads......Thanks for the suggestion, but I already did my weekly clean-up routine, and it includes CCleaner; Malwarebytes; and Defraggler (this is in
addition to ALWAYS having my TrendMicro Internet Security-Pro 2009 running
and doing a complete scan everyweek).

It was a GREAT idea, but my problem is DEFINITELY due to lack of space!!

I've deleted everything else I don't use, but when I see how much space all the Microsoft 'stuff' takes up it bothers me because I DON'T USE IT!!! :cry

    Any other ideas????

Thanks for your help, Dacads...I appreciate it!

    Gratefully,
    Nuts4Mutts :)

Ok, so how bad is your lack of space? 25% free, 10% free? ...

Do you have a second PC working, in case this one goes wrong?

Do you have all your irreplaceable data backed up away from this PC and verified as good?

    Hi Everyone!

To satrow....according to the last Defraggler results I have about 48%-50% free. I run Vista Home Premium on this Laptop, and IMHO Vista seems to need a lot more 'breathing room' to work properly. Even when I first added the extra GB of new RAM, (at the timeit almost DOUBLED what was in there), it was a barely noticeable improvement....it ALWAYS ran slowly in comparison to my Dell Dimension 8200 Desktop that runs the WONDERFUL Windows XP-Home, SP-3 from the beginning. It's 100 times faster than Vista ever was for me.

But, hey, it's only my opinion. ;)

Any ideas on what I can safely delete....I mean, I DON'T use anything of Microsoft's on this Laptop except for Internet Explorer 7. What would happen if I deleted MS Office and MS Student?? Those 2 things alone are almost 900 MB!!! Wouldn't that speed up everything else for me?? Should I do something else to speed things up?

Oh, BTW, i just ran "Registry Booster" over last weekend and it didn't make a lot of difference, either; I think I'm dealing with a space issue PERIOD, but I could be wrong.

    Gratefully;

If you have around 50% free and you run a full cleanup and defrag every few weeks, nothing is gonna improve your speed by any noticeable amount, short of replacing your hard drive with a newer, faster version. Sorry, your PC is pretty much maxed out; sure, boot times may be improved slightly by removing any extraneous software that may load dll's etc. with Windows but a laptop with a GMA 945/950 chipset just ain't gonna cut it with games.

If you have your original CD/DVD's, you may want to try creating a vLited version of Vista to make a clean install with, that would give your machine a small performance boost without the bloat of a full-blown Vista.

Uninstall anything you don't need or want - that's up to you :)

Have you taken a look at your Startup list?
Trim it to the bare essentials.

    Hi All!

TO sartow....would getting an external hard drive solve my problem?? I've seen tiny-in-size, but gigantic in disc space (like 1TB, and it's small enough to fit in a shirt pocket...or my purse!), and they aren't that expensive)!! I'm concerned that another drive would 'overload' the Intel processor.

How would I set it up? Can this laptop take the extra load? It has an Intel Pentium Dual Core processor, and all the best "guts"....it was a gift for me to use when I'm confined to bed, as I'm disabled....most times I can't sit at the desktop. I was trying to find the easiest way to get some space, FAST!! What would I do...leave everything on this C Drive, then just start filling the new external drive?

To hrlow2....Thanks for the idea, but I did that a while back....this Laptop has been S-L-O-W from the beginning compared to my Dell Desktop. Vista Home Premium (on my Laptop) is just slow by nature because it's bloated by design. I'll take my Dell with XP Home, SP-3 ANY DAY!!!

But, hey, it's only my opinion rolleyes

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! If it's safe to delete any MS stuff, or
if my thought about an external Harddrive makes sense, let me know; I'm still
    open for more ideas!

    Thanks again!

    Gratefully,
    Nuts4Mutts :)

    Hi

Uninstalling applications is unlikely to help speed up your PC, unless you have less that a few GB of HDD space left, as Hrlow mentions you need to look at what applications are running in the background and the startup list is a great place to start.

But if you dont use MS office then uninstall it but make sure that you have the licence information for it in case you wish to re-install it at some point, however if it came with the PC it maybe a OEM install that once removed may not re-install as you dont have the oroginal media or licence codes.

What games are you trying to play? as Satrow mentions Intel onboard graphics is where your PC is suffereing in playing games, especially if its high end 3D FPS games, only high end laptops with dedicated graphic cards will play games well, which is why desktops will always win in gaming. Sadly you wont be able to add a higher spec graphic card to your laptop.

While an external HDD will help with extra storage it wont help with the speed of the PC.
