Interesting that Windows 7 has doubled its adoption, this year to August 2010. :cool

What are you using and why?

I use Windows 7 as I get it free :) even have a signed Gold Commemorative box of Win7 from Steve Balmer as well as a beta DVD original signed by Jon DeVann

But in reality I will use whatever is avaiable dont care for allegience to an application as many work for for purpose, I just choose personally to use the latest tech in any field, that is Windows 7 x64 at present, but I do have XP SP3, Vista SP2, Ubuntu, Linux Mint and Windows 7 SP1b installed as well, do they all work, well yes and work fine.

MarketShare is a great website for data on usage and stats on various things from OS to Browsers etc, you can drill down to version used etc

Bazza please share the link source you used for that image? Stats are not work a damn if you cannot site the source of the information, the % of Win7 adoption is likely correct from internals I know of, but I could just as easily type up an Excel spreadsheet of data and screenshot it to say anything.

I have Windows 7 ultimate X64 and got it half price during the promo from MS.

I am amazed at how many are still with XP, is it financial or preference??

I spend a lot of time in hospital and the two major hospitals here (one over 1000 in-patients and the other over 500) are still with god knows how many PCs on XP but i would imagine that the need to re-train so many staff is a factor in that.

Personally, I prefer XP because I am much more familiar with it and can find my way around it easier.
Office machine is Vista and I still get lost trying to find stuff I could go straight to on my machine. (less productive).

True geeks will use whatever OS is applicable to the needs they have, Linux is not a "geek" only OS, far from it.

I have no idea where that monthly breakdown came from, so cannot comment on its legitimacy. Also if you had really looked at the link I posted you could drill down to trend (a True Geek would have not skimmed over information) and that will link to monthly breakdowns as MarketShare are a well known source of data for the tech industry, alot you many have to pay for if you want more detialed information, but alot is free.

Splitting hairs and you know what I mean in that any results if not backed up can be falsified even as I know the data here is not as if you actually read my post you would have read

Who's Bill? (oh noticed the edit)

If Bill Gates, then I guess you may have heard he is not in direct control of the company (non exec dir) anymore, Steve Balmer is, Bill more deals with the Gates Foundation and Berkshire Hathaway as a director , but thats just a fanboy comment if the Bill is Gates ;)

I know ;) and its generally a good debate we have also :major

I just have this bugbear in relation to data, must be working in the field I do where things have to have documented and traceable evidence, I know I'm harsh at times, dont always mean to be, just want the pure facts, while screenshots are ok, they dont prove anything, in the main to me they just add ambiguity and a cause for clarification.

Sadly even from the site I posted the data is not always going to be 100% accurate, the market share in applications is open to interpretation alot as it depends who is actually replying to market researchers, we could make Firefox or Linux the predominant applications by voting for them or with some market research companies just tailoring their parameters to a narrow field of data collection.

The general fact is Windows in some form is most used OS, still XP IIRC and in Browsers its still going to be IE with Fx coming a very very close 2nd, IE9 could change this but would need at least 12mths market penetration, to gain good data on usage.

In the end market data on whats most used, means jack!! as we will all use what we feel is best for us, the data from these more serves corporate culture and the change they may make or the timeframe they may make change as I know we are still XP based but the change is coming to Windows 7 soon as its being tested (have to test as we have at least 5000+ PCs in the building, with various dedicated and security secure apps what hold medical info so needs rigorous testing) at present as is Office 2010, most comon used app in the building is Office XP/2003 but some like me have had authorisation to use Office 2007.

I agree, its same of opinions and critics (various genres) we all have them and are we right, NO and YES, we can be opinionated but in the end its a personal choice to in this case what app or OS to use, are they all good YES and again NO, all have plus and minus points against them.

But my genral opinion is try and ye shall seek the answer.

Do I like Windows, well as the signature line bares out YES I do, but on th other hand I'm a critic of it also, plus I do use Linux and have no issues with OSX either all have good and bad points, I tend to use the best applications for me, they work and I continue to use them, if they didnt I would seek a new option.

At home- Win7, Vista, Snow leopard and Ubuntu.
Got two MacBook Pros and an iMac, not my choice but the brat likes it. Nothing against the Mac since I don't game. Trouble free and next to no maintenance. As is Ubuntu.

    Machines at office/work are all Win7 32bit.

    Cheers..

No I can relate to that as XP is a pig to navigate when you are more used to Vista or Win7 and the menus and options are more fluid, especially Start Search, dont think I have used "Programs" or "All Programs" (in XP) for years, too easy to type the app name you want.

Yeah Linux is near as damn it close to the OOBE that Windows gives the end user, dont think I have had issues at all with drivers with my current hardware, wheras in the past you'd have to fiddle like mad to get networking etc working in Linux, now in the main it just works. But sadly its still a niche OS as most end users apart from the geeky types miss the Windows applications they are used too, but give Linux time and it will be a more used OS.

I like Apple and agree its price and the service support is the pitfall, its not as easy to fix or get new HW for an Apple as it is with a Windows based PC.

Financial and comfort. XP feels like a pair of pj's to me so why would I throw it out if it is still functioning fine?

I can understand business being hesitant to change to Windows 7 or even Vista in the past. New hardware, software and training costs must be enormous for them, especially during a recession.

When I purchased XP in 2003 for the 1st time I knew so little about PC's and their software that I thought support for it would last forever and didn't know that new versions were being created all the time. :-o :-D

My "primary" PC - the one I built going on six years ago and have pretty much hit the wall on upgrading is running XP Pro. This is my "play" computer. I don't intend to upgrade it at this time . . . since it used the original DDR ram, the upgrade costs wouldn't be worth it. Any new PC I build will get Windows 7.

I have a secondary PC I built - a bit more modern but still based on the P4 3.0E processor. It is also running XP Pro. It is my "working" PC - I use it pretty much to crunch video files (I convert video for people - mostly old VHS and such home movie fodder). It hardly ever has an internet connection, so I don't see any reason to upgrade it yet.

Wife's lappy is running Win 7 home, and we love it. I like it much better then the Vista PC's I have used/worked on. It came with Vista, but had the upgrade option. Easy upgrade, also.

We have two other PC's on the house LAN that run XP Pro, but they are pretty much dormant now . . . one in the guest room, and another in the basement in my kid's old room. I dont' remember the last time either was on - well, a friend from the UK stayed with us in 2007 . . . so that might be the last time the guest room PC was used - she checked her e-mail while here.

Last and certainly least I have some outdated PC's in my basement PC "graveyard" - one at least is running Windows 98.

I think a lot of it is financial . . . why shell out a couple bills on a new OS when what you have still works ok. After all, MS is still going to provide XP security updates for a bit longer. A lot of people would have to upgrade hardware (and/or software) to make the change, which adds to the cost - there comes a point when it makes more sense to just buy a new computer, and for a lot of people that just isn't in the budget. If it ain't broke . . .

It's certainly a good idea to upgrade for many reasons - safety, new features, more stable system . . . but it's not always viable.

Well, I guess I'm the only one here that remains in the 'Stone Age!':-D I'm still using Win2000 Pro w\SP4!:-o I figure that since it does everything I want it too do and I've never had a problem with it, I can see no need to change....yet!
