Just curious to see what cell phone/home phone/VOIP companies folks use.

I myself have a Verizon cell phone (used to be Cingular a while back), and SunRocket VOIP. No home phone--I tried Verizon for a bit and found their customer service so much more of a hassle than the cell ever was that I dropped it.

o2 = http://www.o2.co.uk/ ( used to be the mobile arm of BT, BT do marketing, branding and customer service and Vodaphone do the network stuff )

Sprint, though thinking of changing providers after several years.

    How is Verizon's coverage, Adrynalyne?

For here (AZ), its unbeatable. They cover all major areas and most fringe areas.

I drove from Green Valley, AZ to L.A. and never once dropped a signal. We drove from here to Melbrooke(sp?), AL, and almost always had a signal, too.

Their phone selection isn't so hot though.

Thanks. I live in Birmingham, and if you got all the way through AL, it will definately work for me.

If you're in the UK, it's been proven that Orange and Vodafone have the best network coverage, guess what my family are on.... ;)

I agree there.. But... Vodafone likes to welcome you to France when you along the south coast.... of England.. Costing you a looootttt of money if someone phones you. Virgin however has appalling signal, so does not recognise you are even on Earth, let alone Dorset, and thus does not charge you for receiving calls...

Kinda only because you don't have enough signal for calls.... But it's cheaper?

No long distance service on the home phone, there's no point.

Question... are US mobiles locked to certain areas or networks, just asking as I have a unlocked world phone ( not network tied...) that I can use all over europe, with pretty good signal, not tested USA yet but gather it will work ok.

Me and the misses have BT for our land line connection with internet, and we both have Vodaphone for our mobiles.

I can't speak for other companies, but Verizon phones are definately locked into their network, unless you buy one of their global phones.

and I bet they cost a fortune?

Mine's what you would call a global phone, Siemens SL55 in black if interested.

i use Verizon... very good signal strength in many diff. areas...

Tobasco how much customer service do you actually use/need that you would drop a company because of it? From my own experiences, I hardly ever have to talk to the Verizon people... alot of things you can do online via their website....

One company I here people relentlously bitching and complaining about is Cingular... alot of people complain to me about not getting signals in areas they frequent and also the fact that they charge you air time while listening to voice mail, and there is no time limit for how long a voice message can be so if someone inadvertently calls your phone, and doesn't realize it, you could be in for a 20+ minute message and a large phone bill =]

In the UK I had Orange...no problems at all...excellent service.

Here in the US I have cingular WITH roaming and it is very erratic once out of the cities. Home is Qwest...excellent service and very helpful too.

I have to talk to Verizon all the time, because I can never access anything on their website. After five or more tries, I sometimes can log in to my account (it keeps telling me I have the wrong password, but if I punch it in enough times it finally goes through because it IS, in fact, the correct password). After I'm logged in, it often shows there is no wireless number associated with my account.

Well after my experience with Cingular, I didn't have much patience for any of them. It's a long story, but one quick anecdote gives you an idea--12 months after cancelling my Cingular service I received a threatening letter in the mail from a debt collection agency demanding I remit payment to them for an outstanding debt of several hundred dollars owed to Cingular Wireless. I called Cingular, as I had cleared my account before dropping the service (can't cancel with an outstanding bill).

The CS rep looked, said, well you owe for X, Y and Z months. I said, I cancelled in the beginning of X month. He looks...hmm, yep, you did, but you still owe for X, Y, and Z. I asked how that made sense...he sat for a second and said...strange, you know, it doesn't! You don't owe us after all! Have a nice day! Nothing like having a mark on my credit b/c of their error.

Anyway, the Verizon landline sitch was ridiculous as well. Basically the service worked fine for a day, and then crapped out on me. I called Verizon, and they said hte problem was on my end and that if I wanted they could send a technician out for $200. I had the service for all of three days. Told them I'd be damned if I was going to pay that, and told them to cancel the service and I'd pay for the three days.

Got SunRocket shortly after that, and it's been night and day. The few times I've dealt with CS, they've been nice, no computer recordings to dial through, and they never laugh at you even when the problem is discovered to be as silly as having been dialing the wrong number. I've even had them call me back later on to make sure that my problem was fixed and I had no more issues! That's customer service. :)

ahh your Verizon phone was a landline...

here where i live in MD... Verizon is installing optic lines all over the neighborhood.... they must have contracted people to do the work for them because all the crews are spanish and hardly speak any english.... anyhow, they are creatming mayhem among the communities... digging huge holes in people's front yards, leaving potholes in the street and not filling them... my sister's neighbor had her cable line accidentally cut by the verizon crews and they lost their cable and phone line for almost 3 weeks... also, those idiots hit a gas line and had to evacuate the area and the fire department came...

i swear there has to be stricter accountability for these cable/phone companies...

    Ouch. That really stinks!

Another benefit to VOIP. No need to dig new holes in the ground! :D
