I have gotten my hand on quite a bit of computer pars , so i try to ensemble a computer or two as a hobby
One thing that puzzles me is haw i can find out what processor i can use on a given mother board
If i have a intel 2,8 ghz and want to change it to a duo 2 core ( got 3-4 different duo cores )
How can i know if it will work
It fist in the socket , but the machine don`t start , just keeps spinning without booting
Have the same problem with ADM processor when trying to change to 64x2
It fits in socket AM2 , but do not start the computer

Is there anyway to see if it will work or must i try them all until one works ?
Have gotten one to work , but feels this was pure luck since so many don’t work

Would be nice to gat an extra computer or two so that i can get my own back from the kids

is there a guide that can tell me what fits , or can i see it on the processor vs socket

You will need to find the motherboard model number which should be printed on it. Then go to the manufacturer's support site and look up the specific motherboard page and there should be a tab for CPU support listed.
Some motherboards need later BIOS revisions to support CPUs that are introduced after the mobo is released. Just have to do a little research for the combination that works for your parts.;)

Agreed. This list is typically called a QVL - qualified vendors list - though your motherboard maker may call it something else.

There is normally a RAM QVL as well. While you must buy a listed CPU, there are too many RAM makers and models for the motherboard makers to test them all. So you do not need to buy from the list, but you do need to buy RAM with the same specs as listed RAM.

This is also true and typical, and fortunately, I have found the board makers are very good at updating the QVLs when they update CPU support in the BIOS updates.
