I have a movie that is in avi format and I want to save it to a dvd and it is too big to do that. I want to know which program I can use to split it and how do I split it so I can save it. Any and all help is deeply appreciated.

How big is the file? Is it an uncompressed Avi? Avi(s) should not be larger than a a DVD.

Do you want to split the movie into to smaller Avi(s) that are each playable or just split the file into two or more parts that will have to be put together before it can be played?

VirtualDub will edit the movie into smaller avi files.
VirtualDub could also be used to change the encoding to a format that will use less space. My guess either your video or audio is in an uncompressed format.
Something like the filesplitter will split the file into smaller pieces that will have to be put back together.

Let me know what you are would like to try and I can give you some instructions.

Thanks for the reply. What I have is a four year old dvd player and with it being an avi movie I change it to dvd as I burn it and it comes out bigger than the avi. I checked and it is over 6 gig when I checked if it would fit. What I would like to do is make it a two disk movie so I can watch it. So far this is the first one that has turned out this way. Again, any and all help is greatly appreciated.

What software are you using to convert from avi to DVD? DvdFlick will convert from avi to DVD and limit the resulting files to 4.3gb which will fit on a single DVD. Check out the guide.

I get the movies in divx format and have to use a converter to get the avi, then I use xilisoft to burn them and change to a dvd, the onbe I want is over 6 gig and to get the whole movies I need a program that will divide it and still pick up the second half and put it on dvd number two. I thank you for the info but so far I haven't got it towork like I know can be done. I have seen other movies that were divided.

Just so you know divx is already an avi container. Just changing the name to movie.avi would work as well as converting it.

OK, I'm still unclear. The movie you are starting with .divx is 6gb? Or it becomes 6gb after your conversions?

Because what I am saying is that if you have a 1.3gb .divx movie than DVDFlick will convert it to a 4.3gb DVD movie.

The divx I have will not change to an avi and I have yet to see one that will change it that way. I changed it to home theater thinking it would work, but no luck. It is a 2.1 gig movie when I attempt to change it to dvd with xilisoft and it tells me it is too big for a dvd if I go ahead and change it so I don't. if I don't find one that will work I guess I will just have to buy the movie. Thanks for all the help. I tried the dvd flick every way I can see to do it and it doesn't work, it cut the movie in half and now I don't have the tell end of it any more, guess I should have made a copy. I am still learning on this.

A divx file is a flavor of avi file. Only the divx branded encoder outputs a file named .divx but it could just as easily be named .avi because any program reading it recognizes it as an avi file encoded using the divx codec. But that technicality doesn't solve your problem.

I have never encoded such a large avi to DVD format so I can't give first hand knowledge.

VirtualDub will allow you to split the avi into two pieces which should each be convertible to fit on a DVD.

    Unzip and run Virtutal Dub.
    File>Open>Browse to your movie
    Video>Direct Stream Copy
    Audio>Direct Stream Copy
Use the LEFT pointing skinny arrow button to mark the beginning of the movie(skinny arrows are on the far right under 80000)
Use the slider to move about halfway through the movie
Use the gold "key" buttons to fine tune the place you want to cut the movie
Use the RIGHT skinny arrow to mark the end of the segment
File>Save as AVI choose a name like movie_part01.avi
Vdub will write a new file for first half
Then in Vdub hit delete key (It will not change the original movie file)
File>Save as AVI choose a name like movie_part02.avi
Vdub will write a new file of second half

I think you should now be able to convert to DVD using xilisoft or DVDflick.

I tried Virtual Dub, but the files it creates are HUGE. I extracted a 5 min segment from a 80 min .AVI. The original was 1 gig in size and the 5 min segment was 2 gig. Any ideas?

I wonder if hjsplit will do it for you? You need to search for it ........but it will split avi files.

I should have put this warning in the instructions above:

I forgot to mention in those instructions that you should really cut the movie on the gold key frames. Necessary to help keep audio in synch in certain files.
So slider to approximate beginning of clip. Gold keys to get as close to your ideal beginning. Left arrow key to mark beginning cut position.
Slider to approximate end of clip. Gold keys to get as close to your ideal ending. Right arrow key to mark end cut position.
    Then Save as...

I didn't try hjsplit, but would it create playable AVI files?

I did find something that works great! its called "SolveigMM AVI Trimmer"

    Thanks for responding

HjSPlit just splits files. It is/was good for people trying to split files larger than a 700mb CD to backup their files. It will not produce a playable AVI. It is only for temporarily splitting files and then putting them back together.

VirtualDub is a good program for Avi(s) but not a simple interface. The DirectStreamCopy thing is confusing the first time but the program is good (IMO). Has tons of features I never use.

I'm going to look at SolveigMM AVI Trimmer. It is always good to check out other apps.

Thanks for posting back with your solution. :)
