What programs can open a LAN connection

My daughter have a acer pc
OS XP home
LAN card Broadcom 10/100 MB
The problem
When xp startup the lan card instantly connect to the the internet
Of my own machines,it is myself ,there determind when the connection shall open or close .I have look in the registry HK_LM ,HK_CU ---run ,run once ,also in bios,but i cant find what funktion ,set the card to open. Some help.Best regards oldi

 

Its the hardware/driver that's detecting if you are connected.
You could just disable the connection (My Network Places>Properties>right click-disable, or right-click disable on network icon in system tray) but that would mean no program would be able to connect to the internet.

A software firewall might be a better choice where you can make rules to determine which program(s) are allowed access to the net. Maybe using the Windows Firewall may help also.

 

Why would it matter if its connected or not? Im confused...

There is always dial up!

 

For security reasons maybe? Or control daughter's usage of the net?
(disregard windows firewall in previous posting, thought you had Service Pack 2 installed).

 

Security or not if your already compromised 'loging in/out' wont solve a thing. And if its the usage of the net your after there are programs that monitor and filter things you dont want your younging to see; face it unless your on top of them looking at 100% of the things they do its never gonna be "secure".

 

Thanks (os xp sp2 home ,it is a adsl connection, it is a portable pc,firewall MS,antiv, Norton 2005) yes i know how to enable and disable the lan connection manual ,before shutdown the pc i disable the lan card(close) ,but after restart and log on the lan connection is open again.I also have used HiJackThis to look for some programs but i ment all is ok ,and in services all is ok.The acer pc have a program name e-manager .Here (in settings ) you can those disable ,lan connection ,apply,ok (ok the connection close)but after a new start the value have change to enable,could it be here? I have several other pc which i have made a configuration on ,but i newer have such a problem .Best regards oldi
