I cannot figure out which programs should be running in the background and which should not. There are way too many running, but I cannot tell, and have not been able to figure out, what some of them are and how to stop them.

    I have a Toshiba Satellite S855 S5381
    8 G Ram
    Core i7 240 G hz

I want to find out if any might be viruses.

I want to stop the ones I don't need.

I added a few browser apps and each one seems to be running a separate program in the background. I need to get my machine to run better.

    Help.

    thanks

    Start here
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/
type the name of the process in the box under Search for Startup and it will tell you that Yes, it is needed, No it is not needed or it depends what programs are installed. If unsure, let it alone and you can go back later and possibly disable it.
