What REALLY ticks me off...

What really pisses me off if when the installer for a program recommends turning off antiviruses. :mad

I am NOT turning off my antivirus for ANY program!

Do you scan it first before installing it? That's usually a safe way to go on any install.

Yes, I scan it, but I've heard of ones that aren't caught by the A/V until they're executed.

If it's an application that you really want/need then scanning is about the best you can do.
We all do our best not to get malware but sometimes it just sneaks in and we must then deal with it.

I don't see why turning off your protection would be a hassle, just pull the plug, kill the AV and install if you trust it. An AV looks for peculiar functions, heck just turn it off. You don't need an AV!:-D

Part of the problem is the piss-poor heuristics used by some A/V scanners, eg. many will flag anything written using Autoit as a trojan just because some malware writers also use this excellent tool.

Similar with many anti-crack/hack packers designed to impede users cheating and using cracked software for free, if these packers are also used by malware writers to attempt to avoid detection then many A/V's will also flag anything packed with these tools as bad.

If the A/V's actually scanned thoroughly for payload instead of relying on flagging on the basis of the tools used to create/pack these apps and their websites had an easy, fast route to submitting a file to be cleared of a false positive result with a new definitions update, things may be safer and more easily dealt with.

www.virustotal.com is a good way of checking a suspect file, if you know roughly how each of the scanners used works.

That was the only way I could install service pack 3 from Windows Update, otherwise I don't think I would from another site. Then again I had a nasty slip by my AV recently. Now I'm just thinking through my keyboard here rolleyes
