Im going to go out and get a new computer soon... and i dont know what parts i should get, im going to build it around a AMD 3600+ 64bit and a Radeon x300, and probably around 1 gig of ram, the thing i need to know most about is the mb cause i need one with usb 2 and fire wire. i will probably use the dvd rom and burner from my current machine.

and is wireless keybaord and mouse better than one with wires

you must have been seeing things ;)

As for motherboard, their are a few that will do the job you want well from ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI etc something like this one http://www.giga-byte.com/MotherBoard/Products/Products_GA-K8NMF-9.htm ( was on the GB webpage at this moment in time.. )

Have a search for some reviews on A64 mobos and that will give you some ideas on specs and test results.

Wired/Wireless .... both have good and bad points to them, either would do...

hmm, should i install windows or linux? and how much ram can the OS's handle cause i saw a Mobo that had 4 ddr slots and thought of putting in 4 2 gig sticks. and i was thinking of going down a model for the vidio card

Entirely upto you, either would be fine,

8gb or ram! why? plus offhand I dont think consumer mobos will support that amount you would have to go with server/enterprise class boards, most consumer boards will be around the 4gb mark.

XP iirc has a 4gb max limit, the XP 64-bit and 2003 versions are at 16gb limits as for Linux that one I dont know and a Linux user maybe able to answer that one.

again upto your personal pref or price limits.

one question when are you looking at buying or building this PC as if its say 3-6 months time then prices of hardware will be cheaper as new tech comes out so the x300 may still be an option then?

hmm, well it all depends on how i get the money for it, if i get the money from my dad i dont get a car but i get 5k to spend right now, if i save up i wont get it for a couple months, i was thinking of buying the parts peice by peice if i had to use my own money.

and should i go with SATA or IDE, i was looking into going with SATA

I'd go for the Car and take a few months to save up the cash for PC.

as for IDE or SATA ... SATA all the way.

In regards to what you said about using either Linux or Windows why not get a fairly sized hard-drive and partition it, giving you a partition for Windows and another for Linux ^_^ Oh, and I'd suggest Fedora Core 3 , unless someone thinks otherwise. o_O
