    Hello,:)

My laptop is running with Win XP SP3.
Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 is installed.
    The browser is Mozilla Firefox.

Please, I would like to ask what other programs (anti-malwares, anti-spywares, anti-worms, firewall, etc.) and what Firefox updates should be installed with KIS 2014 in order to achieve the best protection?

    Yours sincerely,

    Jean

I've heard of people combining comodo firewall (from the comodo internet security package.. set it to firewall mode) with different virus softwares including kaspersky.

    Hi Jean

I do the same as plodr above with installing Malwarebytes and also install Spywareblaster as well, this app helps stop the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software

Does not run, you just need to manually check for updates once a week.

I'd always keep Firefox upto date with all new versions for best protection, but the best protection you can use is only download from known good download sites (like Majorgeeks as we test all software for unwanted malware), don't use peer 2 peer as nothing ever free and that download is likely to come with unwanted malware.

Don't click on popups that crop up on your screen without reading them first to see are they genuine or not, as many rogue apps are installed from popups on webpages that appear to be a malware warning or similar but are just the route to installing malware.

    Hi Everybody!
Thanks a lot for your help,

When I was writing Firefox updates, I was thinking about these Mozilla adds that can block unwanted stuffs.

Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, HitmanPro 3 are installed with KIS 2014 on my laptop.
I am thinking that may be Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, HitmanPro 3 are redundant.

    - Please, should I remove any of these three software?

I am very curious about Ad adware.
    - Do you know if Ad adware is a good option?

    - Is it better staying with only KIS 2014, Malwarebytes, Spywareblaster and a firewall like Comodo, even if it seems that KIS 2014 has its firewall?

    - Is Google Chrome safer than Firefox?

    Cheers,

    Jean

    Hi

So long as those 3 softwares are not running in the background and only on demand scanning then no need to uninstall as always good to have opinions from other antimlware software as not all scan for the same things, they all have some difference in the virus DAT file.

I personally with what you already have installed would not see the need for Ad-Aware

KIS 2014 has a firewall and you don't need a 2nd one, likely to cause more issues, so KIS's firewall and the protection likely built into your internet router will be fine, just remember if KIS firewall pops up a message from an app wanting access to the internet, you check that its something you have installed and not a rogue app.

Firefox is fine, all browsers do similar jobs and the main issue with security in a browser is more what you download as no browser will stop you clicking and downloading an app or link that has malware. As what browser maybe most secure today will not be tomorrow as the malware writers will always attack the predominantly used software. I suggest go with the browser you are most comfortable with and like the features of, I tend to use IE11 more than the Mozilla Nightly and Chrome I have installed.

If you are convinced adding a firewall is the way to go...

Been using PrivateFirewall for a few weeks with XP SP3. I tried Comodo, but it was over featured for me, and it crashed after about 3 weeks. PF is more a straight firewall app. For sure it is much easier for me to find things in PF than it was in Comodo, but the actual process working with the program is similar when it comes to alerts. The biggest plus for me with PF is that the program gives notification when something on the PC has been stopped from making contact with another IP. Don't recall Comodo doing this, and it's very helpful in that I can look quickly go to the log, find the IP of the remote computer, and then allow the contact if it's something I know about. This feature and the fact that the interface seems to make more sense in that it is more compact and information is sensibly placed and easy to find make PF a better choice for me. I really like the tabs and that I can instantly click on a tab and look over the established and listening connections. For me, this is the biggest plus.

I'm not an expert on firewalling by ANY definition of the word expert, but I would recommend PF over Comodo. The Comodo firewall is big and impressive in scale with the Kiosk and so on, but where it's all about security I think PF is close to as good (very close in the test results I saw). Add in the sensibility in the PF dialog for working with the program and overall I think it is a more effective tool for typical users like myself...

As DavidGP correctly already pointed out, KIS comes with its own two-way firewall. So you do not need to add a different one and really should not mix in a separate firewall. When using an internet security suite from anyone, it is best to stick with major components ( like AV, AS, and FW ) from the security suite.

Also to reinforce what DavidGP stated. Simply put, no! You are are way better off with Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware as background scan only options.

    Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen!
Thanks a lot for your help!

I used the anti-malwares programs mentionned previously and the laptop is now much better.

I observed that a malware that redirected, before the cleaning of win XP, a bunch of pages to "Linkbucks" has invaded the Safari browser of my ipad.

Please, does it exist a program that is able to remove virus, malware, etc. and to prevent infections on iOS?

    Hi Jean

I would go through the guide below as not all anti-malware softwares can remove all malware perfectly, sadly its a complex issue and in most instances you would need manual expert help and at Majorgeeks we have these experts.

You may well be malware free but worth checking.

As for iOS on a iPad, I was under the impression that these devices where malware free, unless jailbroken! I would never say a device would never get malware as they likely will at some point, but I not heard of it on iPads/iPods yet.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1677 clear all Safari website data and see how you go.

    Hi David,

    Thanks for your answer!

I heard about people who have the same problem on Safari.

    Hi,

Does somebody know if iolo System Mechanic is a good solution for system maintenance?

    Cheers,

Truthfully, I trust no program for system maintenance. Most do more harm than good. I want to do it myself, make a restore point and know exactly what I'm doing. Some of the programs do so much that you have no idea what changes are being made and what is being removed.

XP SP3 support will be ending in April. I'll be pulling the XP computers in our house off the internet. XP's defragger wasn't that great, IMO, so I did install a third party one. But for 4 months of use, I'd simply recommend using the one that comes with Windows to defrag your hard drive.

Registry cleaning: about the only program I'd ever consider using is CCleaner because it is the safest. Some have managed to get themselves in trouble using it. Fortunately, I've never had a problem. I think it is far better to have a few unneeded things in the registry than to remove one that is essential.

    Hi Everybody!

I installed the add-on NoScript 2.6.8.8 on Firefox. I noticed that when I open a site (fretjam.com) that contains videos, this add-on will not let the videos playing, even if I put the address of the site in the white list of the add-on.

Please, somebody know what could be done?

May be this add-on should be remove if it is not essential.

    Cheers,

    Jean

Jotapi - just mouse over on the NoScript Icon and you will see many opportunities to - allow all this page - temporarily allow all this page - etc. Selecting/clicking on one of these will work for most websites, YT included.

You need to have Windows "Add-on" bar enabled in order to see the icon that oma referenced. Right click on Firefox menu bar and put a check next to "Add-on Bar". A new menu bar will pop up opposite your Windows taskbar. On it will be the No-Script icon. Either mouse over it or simply left click on it to bring up the No-script menu, from where you can allow scripts on individual pages or entire domains. It's a great add-on to have running because it blocks harmful scripts but it will require you to configure it (white-list) for individual sites and pages. In other words, it can be a pain in the butt for people who regularly view pages that run scripts. I'm not sure why your white-listed sites aren't being allowed. White-listing works fine for me. Right click on the No-Script icon and choose "Options" from the popup menu. Click the "Trusted" tab, then the "Whitelist" tab and make sure the site you want to see is in the whitelist.

    Hi Everybody,

I wrote previously that I put the address of the site in the white list of the add-on, and I did this from the icon.
Nevertheless, the frame of the videos I wanted to play did not appear in the page.

When I removed this add-on from Firefox, the frame of the videos appeared and I was able to run them, but the script protection was gone.

Did you verify that the site address appeared in the whitelist? (see my previous post). It would be nice to figure this out so that you could go on using No-Script rather than abandoning it over something that can be fixed.

    Hi Rusty,

Indeed I checked that it was there. But it did not work. That's weird.

Not only must YouTube be allowed (temporarily or permanently) but also yimg (YouTube images) in order for noscript to allow you to see the videos.

If you install it again, and I recommend installing it because staying protected from malicious scripts goes a long way towards keeping your computer secure, simply select Temporarily allow all this page near the top.

    Hi Plodr,

Please, how do I add yimg to the white list of this add-on? Does it exist a address such www.yimg.com?
I checked that youtube.com is in the white list.

I'm pretty sure we are not going to figure out why the web addresses are not getting into your whitelist. Maybe it's a bug in NoScript, maybe some other program is interfering with your browser, who knows. You could try asking the question in the NoScript forum at:

    http://noscript.net/forum

For now, you should do as plodr suggested. When you get to a scripted page containing videos that you want to watch, click on the NoScript icon and choose:
    Allow this page
    or
    Temporarily allow this page

That will have the same effect as shutting down NoScript while viewing that page.

The web addresses from where I can not play the videos appearing in the pages are fretjam.com (that I mentionned previously) and justinguitar.com. I tried to open one of its last post at http://www.justinguitar.com/en/SB-405-LoveMeTender-ElvisPresley.php, the page opened but the two videos (a lesson teaching the song and the original song by the King) did not load when the add-on is enable.

These web addresses should get into the white list. And they went, but the frame of both videos did not appear.

To get justinguitar to play the video (I do not do whitelists)
I had to allow 3 things: justinguitar, s3amazonaws, and amara.org

    Jotapi Private E-2

    Hi Plodr,

    Thanks a lot!

What are s3amazonaws and amara.org? How did you find they were linked to the site?

  26. plodr

plodr MajorGeek Super Extraordinaire Moderator Staff Member

Hover over the noscript icon and you see lots of addresses.
I have no idea but the video on that site uses those.
Trial and error to see what you need to enable. If you don't want to pick and chose then simply select Temporarily allow all this page as I mentioned in post #20.

    I will do the same.

Note that plodr instructed you to temporarily allow those sites, not to add them permanently to your whitelist. Once you get familiar with any of those sites and decide them to be safe, only then should you add them to the whitelist. If you are going to simply add every site to your whitelist then there's no point in using NoScript.
