I recently formatted my computer without backing up any of my drivers. I managed to get most of them working but I have no idea what sound card I have, and so I can't download the correct driver.

When I try and install the hardware, it appears under the name "Multimedia Audio Controller", then when I try and install it I get a message saying "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)". Then the wizard cannot find the right software to install it.

I have also downloaded AIDA32 but this only reads it as Multimedia Audio Controller as well, any ideas on finding out what my sound card is?

is the computer a name brand computer, such as dell or gateway? if so, you can go to their respective website and put in the serial number of the computer and it will give you all the software for your computer.

if not, then you may have to look at the card itself for a make or model number on the card itself. if the sound card is on-board, then you will need to install motherboard drivers to get it to work.

Try uninstalling the device from Device Manager, then use something like Everest or try Aida32 again.

cant you just go to run and type in DXDIAG right?

That won't identify it if it's not installed correctly, ie drivers.

I've run "dxdiag" and it says that no sound device can be found. I've run both Everest and AIDA32 and they both come up with the same thing. Any more ideas anyone?

Are you using integrated sound as opposed to a separate soundcard? If so, the drivers for it should be on your motherboard disk (or on the disk that came with your PC if you have an "off the shelf" system)

Did you have sound prior to the reformat?

Did you uninstall the card first from Device Manager before running Everest?

If all that fails, look in the case and see if there are any serial numbers or writing you can google.

If it's a separate card, it should have an FCC ID number, which you can check HERE.

Model and brandname of computer helps in knowing where to start. Most likely it may be a Crystal sound chipset, or even a Via. Post the model of the computer or motherboard if you built it or someone else did.

I uninstalled the sound card from device manager like you said and managed to find the right driver - thanks for your help everyone.
