I posted a thread over in Malware removal, but it looks like that wasnt the right forum.

Here is a copy of what I said there. (The link is http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=925192#post925192 if you want to read the replies.)

    ------------------------

I upgraded this machine to IE7 a couple months ago and have been usiing it lightly. Now that I'm back on it the laptop is running very sluggish...

The upgrade to IE7 worked and its not trying to download anything for me.

I have my HD partitioned into three drives:

    C:
    E: for backup files
    F: Scratch disk for Photoshop.

I looked at my backup drive and found a couple folders I didnt recognize:

    1. 1f4628583739a9b3d8b112f8ec08ccd6. This folder has a subfolder called Update.

    2. d7abfb8767734c212256692aaf378ddd This folder only contains one file, called msxml4-KB927978-enu I tried to attach that file to this thread but it won't let me siince its attached to another post.
Here is the link to the file.

I was thinking of eliminating this partition as I dont need it on a separate HD anymore, but i don't want to mess this up. Did IE7 install in the wrong location?

I hope I posted this in the correct forum. If not, let me know where I should move it to.

    Thanks!

    Halo:

Thanks - I looked at the link you sent and it told me to remove security update 927978, but i cant see that in anyof the files anywhere. I looked under Add/Remove programs, and looked at the update files in the Windows file. I did a search and dont find any files with 927978 in the name. So am I safe to just go ahead and delete those file?

Also, the last two times I restarted Windows did a security check on my F: drive, which is one of the partitioned drives.

I was going to delete that partition. Am I safe to do so?

    Thanks!

yes you can delete those files as they are installer log files, it seems that the update was not installed correctly resulting in those files, I have also heard that for some strange reason the log files could end up on a seperate partition if you have one.

You could also try and install the manual version of this update then delete those files as they are left over junk.
