    Hi,
Ok, I'll try to describe this as easily as I can.
All of a sudden, whenever I clicked on my IE, it brought me to a PAGE NOT FOUND not my homepage...Hmm
I looked in the address bar & this is what it says:
    http://files/Internet Explore/iexplore.exe
I can type in web address, or I mainly just use my favorites, but it is really annoying.
I even went to add/remove went to windows components and unticked IE then came back & ticked it.
    Any help pleasssssse
    Jane

Do me a favour Jane and if your ok with using the registry then have a look at the default data in this location for me?

Enter the registry by clicking Start > Run and type regedit > enter/ok

then just double click each of the folders until you find this location below ( see pic )

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command

then check the default value is this "%1" %* ( I think yours maybe this "%1 %* value )

please post what you find before changing as its worth backing up that area of the registry before changing.

But other than this you can surf the web ok using favs etc, no popups?

    Hi Halo,
Thankyou for help. I can surf the web ok, but when I open IE thats when I get the "Page Not Found".
I had a look and it said exactly the same thing as yours in your diagram, my default value was identical to yours. What shall I do next?
    Thanks

What happens if you go into Internet Explorer, Tools menu, Internet Options and under Home Page change it to another site then click apply then O.K?

Maybe the Home Page Registry entry has somehow become corrupted.

If that doesn't work and you are using XP and you have your Windows CD, go to Start, Run, and copy and paste the following,

    rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\Inf\ie.inf

That should hopefully repair Internet Explorer.

    Hi Insomniac
I cut & pasted your line, but it said "The file "IExplore.Exe" on Windows XP HOme Edition Service Pack 2 cd is needed. I dont have the service pack 2 cd, I downloaded from Microsoft, but I do have XP disk.
    So I cancelled out.
I tried many times to enter a different home page but no luck from Internet Options.
Shall I go ahead with this, dont forget.......Im only a basic knowledge head re computers.

    That makes two of us.

You don't really need the SP2 cd (I know it says you do) the files are on your XP CD, but you have to dig around a bit for them and on your system.

An easier way, go to Start, Run and copy and paste in sfc /scannow

It will ask you for your XP CD to replace any files it finds.

Also try to reset your home page as I explained above.

If the home page keeps reverting back to http://files/Internet Explore/iexplore.exe , then you either have or had some form of spyware or virus.

Do yourself a favour and get an SP2 CD.

Micro$$oft are supplying them for free and you can order them from HERE.

    Hey,
Thanks for help. Ive found the sp2disk, I forgot I ordered it months ago, I havnt even opened it.
Anyway, so what your saying is this:
go to run and enter sfc/scannow?
Just making sure, as I dont want to do anything to screw my computer up.

Yes, but there is a space after the sfc like how I typed it above. (it's easy to miss)

What that will do is check that all the Windows Protected Files are the original ones and aren't corrupt and replace any that it finds.

If you have the SP2 disk, then you can still use that line I suggested previously.

You can't really screw your system up using either.

Don't forget to set your Home Page to something else.
