My first post so please be a little tolerant if I have made a forum booboo!! I have just built a system with an Asus P5K motherboard and an Intel core 2 duo E8400 @ 3.00 Ghz. I have at present just used the stock cooler that came with the processor, really because I forgot to order a cooler, but also as an experiment to see just how it would perform. I saw from here to download a temp prog named Coretemp. I had installed the Asus PC probe II.
There is quite a large difference of opinion between these 2 applications. The Asus probe says my cpu is running @ 32 degC and the Coretemp says 44 degC. Which do I believe and obviously I am now asking what is considered the best air cooler for this processor. Thanks

I trust the one that says the highest temp so I don't fry anything! Use CoreTemp. And Welcome to MajorGeeks!

If you want the best air cooling, well in my experience, the ThermalRight True is the best! I use this one to cool my lightly overclocked Q6600: http://www.jab-tech.com/Thermalright-TRUE-Black-120-pr-4185.html

Get that, slap a 120mm fan on it and you should be in buidness.:cool

Oh yeah, I have mine overclocked from 2.4GHz to 3.1GHz, and with the TR True, I am getting around 49 to 50°C at full load. With a dual core, you will be nice and cool.

I believe.....if you'll put an AMD processor in the next computer you build, you won't have to ask questions about CPU temperatures. The stock cooler will do an admirable job of keeping it cool.

My own AMD Dual Core 3800+ runs cool enough that I can lay my finger on the heatsink even after a whole days running and it's only slightly warm to the touch.

"Core Temp", if you can believe those programs, says my two cores are 39°C and 40°C, respectively.

You only need to worry about temp's when you elect to use those HOT running Intel CPU's.

    I believe......;)

My E8400 is 19'C at idle & 35'C under load. Well, I have a TEC.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermoelectric_cooling

And my pc is in the basement which is 10'C less than ground. And my TEC isn't maxed out yet. :) At one point, the TEC caused condensation so I backed it down.

The most accurate for Wolfdales would be RealTemp with 2 notches left. Next would be Core Temp. The new Speedfan ain't bad. As long as the load temp is under 70'C, you're good.
