Hey There Everybody, I hope this time of the year was good for you. I have Vista Home Premium on a fairly new Laptop (wireless). I uninstalled the Norton Security that was preinstalled :), and I have (1)Windows Defender (updating regularly), your free (2) Avast (updating like daily, (3) Malwarebytes (left over from the last disaster you got me through ;)), and (4) CCleaner. My computer appears to be running just fine except for the occasional "blank page" and it does freeze at times but not often and I have felt it was the site and not me. I have switched away from the Earthlink to Comcast :wine finally, and they offer "McAfee Security Suite" free with the service. Do you think I should leave well enough alone or if not, can I have both Avast, McAfee Security Suite, and my Windows Defender ?

It just seems like I have always counted on Avast, I've never "not" had it basically so can you please share some of your infinate wisdom :cool with me about this please ?

    Hi

No sadly you will have to choose between Avast or McAfee, cannot have both as it will create conflicts in two applications live scanning and could cause serious slowness in your PC.

Personally I would stick with Avast.

Ok, I really would prefer to do nothing anyway :). I appreciate your help. Do you think my occasional "Blank Page" is from something that is bad in my computer ?

    Hi

Has this occasional blank page just started or how long going on for, does it happen on all various websites or just specific ones?

Could be an add-on if your using IE or Firefox causing this on some sites, kinda wouldnt have thought it would be random tho, but test anyway by using IE or Firefox in there no-addon/safe modes, IE you get to via Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools and for Firefox vai its Start > All Programs menu folder, if those options dont cause this then its an addon causing this but let us know and we can go through steps to troubleshoot that.

If you dont use Firefox then download either Firefox or Opera to test they work ok, if they do the issue is with IE and again this narrow the problem down.

Do some cleaning steps like run CCleaner to delete temps and internet temp cache and cookies, corrupt files in those temp locations can cause page errors.

Could be DNS issue with your resolver cache, so click Start and in the Start Search box type CMD and when it shows in the list right click it and choose Run as Administrator, then a black CMD window will open and type at the prompt ipconfig /flushdns and hit enter, this will clear the DNS cache so i any corrupt entries are in their they will be purged.

Could be your ISP having issues, are any neighbours with same ISP and are they having issues? could crudely check line for noise, just pick up the reciever on your phone and does it crackle and hiss, if so ring ISP/phone co to do line test.

If you are on DSL then unplug all phones apart from the modem router to test as one of the DSL line filters could be faulty.

As you say just could be the site, if you believe their is something bad in your PC which doesnt seem like the case but then I'm not sitting in front of your PC seeing what you are but with no redirects, popups and other malware like behaviour I would be guessing, so maybe worth running the Read ME guide in malware forum.
