For Win 98 I use Fix-it Utilities 99 (from Mijenix). Nowadays you should buy System Suite, which among many other tools includes these utilities. The company's name is V-Com (they took this software over from Ontrack, which in turn took it over from Mijenix). :)

    also try RegCleaner:

    http://majorgeeks.com/download460.html

You can pick registry entries you want to delete and then the program backs them up. This is by far the easiest program out there right now.

Regcleaner is a great app and one I use alot still... but it doesnt answer the question at hand, it may remove entries but registry defragmenters do the same job as HD defrag programs and put the data into a contiguous or linear block so access to it is slightly quicker or easier.

@ bazza ... dont know of one off hand but will have a search and keep me eye out for one unless someone chimes in with a solution in the mean time.

I have a question regarding hd defraging. how often do you think it should be done? I haven't done it yet since I got my computer and i have a ton of stuff on here. is there risks like will it get rid of some of my stuff on here?

You have XP right? is it NTFS formatted file system?

Hard question... if you install and uninstall software on a regular basis then maybe once a month if you dont then every two months sould be enough...

I use O&O defrag which keeps track of how the HDs are fragmenting in the background and it will jump in and do a stealth defrag when idle, otherwise I just run Analyse and if its between 5-10% fragmented I defrag..... the bonus of O&O is that you can pick a few defrag options an Access is the one I choose on the primary OS drive all others I use Space defrag.

one thing to remember with NTFS is that the data blocks do not need to be in one contiguous ( all togerther ) block as NTFS leaves gaps between files for growth so fragmentation is minimised to some extent.

if you are just using the normal built in XP defrag click Analyse and if it need defragging it will tell you.

so it will make my computer faster, and it will add more space (even though i dnot need any more space) to my hd. But will it get rid of any files that i might want to keep?

No, a defrag doesn't delete anything. It just rearranges the files and free space

In some cases, you will see improve program application startup since it's all in one contiguous place. If you work with large documents, there'll be an improvement there. In terms of initial startup, it all depends on what you've set up to start. You;ll need to be the judge on that. :)

Hi There BBazza. When i had w98 to defrag the registry start in DOS (hold down the CTRL Key) as the box starts up select the start in DOS mode from the 6 options there and you are presented with a C:prompt. Type the following without the quotes "scanreg /opt" - your registry will then be optimised to remove all the blank spots in it. As for Regcleaner (the freebie) - its great for w98 but there are times when you sometimes have to get in to the registry and lever out the things that Regcleaner will not> And that can be very hairy!. I used Reg Detective to find the dreadful bits and RegEdit Plus to chop them out but save them for restoral in case it was a mistake. Both those progs were free fromPC Magazine but may not be any more.
For your info in all the time i used W98SE i rarely had a blue screen thanks to the progs mentioned above. There are probably others available now but thats my experience.
    Hope this helps

Just to back Robert up on that (though he needs no support on a dead-right call), surprisingly few people know that 98SE has that built-in registry optimizer available from DOS, and it works really well. Just reboot to DOS (one of your options from the standard shutdown menu) then type (as Robert said)
    scanreg /opt
    and hit Enter.

When it's done, it will show you the blinking prompt again. Type
    win
    hit Enter
and in about 30 secs you'll be back in Windows, with a defragged reg.

Rememeber to CLEAN up your reg with one (or more -- I use a whole handful) of the good tools mentioned above BEFORE you use "scanreg /opt" so that you don't create new gaps by using a reg cleaner AFTER defragging the reg.

Sorry, I meant to say that the colon followed immediately by a p is read by this board as a smiley. That's why C:p showed up instead of a C-prompt (C followed by a colon, followed by a >).

Hax, just visited their website. I am looking for a free (preferably) solution that I can use over a long period. Free trials are not what I am after at this stage. Have logged the site, however, and will check it out later when finances permit. Bazza

Ah. Maybe it was AutoRuns that wasn't here.... Or maybe it's just MG's search functions sucking. Which it really, really does -- you so need to fix that, MA.

Type in "cwshredder" --> no hits. Type in "deep burner" and DeepBurner is not a hit. "Cpu burn in" and "cd burn" have the same results list. Search needs to search the app title and a list of keywords and that's it. I've occassionally done searches and gotten 3 or 4 pages of hits... unorganized hits.

Robert. From the DOS prompt in W98SE. Entered scanreg /? for help. No mention of scanreg /opt. Ran Scanreg /opt anyhow.
It went through very quickly, no comments on what it found, what it did, or anything.
I keep my registry pretty clean by running regclean and JV-16 anyhow, but would like some confirmation that "registry has been optimized", or similar. Bazza

    Use google : http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&q=site:majorgeeks.com&btnG=Search

You need Philipp to update the meta tag generation, as well as the search.

Hey, Bazzz! Have a little faith! If ya can't trust Microsoft, who CAN you trust???

Anyhow, kidding aside, the regopt function works quickly, and if you hadn't optimized for a while and HAD deleted a lot of reg garbage with RegSupreme or RegWhatever, you would notice, IF you noted the sizes of user.dat and system.dat earlier, that the sizes of those two files wd be smaller by 2-10 percent.

The trick is to use the machine for a few weeks with installs and deletes as usual, then check the sizes of user and system (the registry for 98) and then use Reg Supreme to clear the deadwood. IF the clearance is significant (i.e., IF RegSupreme finds 300+ entries that need to be cleared), then AFTER you've run the cleaner, reboot, and then note the new sizes of the registry files. THEN shut down to restart in DOS, run scanreg /opt, and check the reg-file sizes again. Should show a significant difference. A 2% saving is good.

Sounds like more work than it is.

Thanks WW. We all love to hate MS but I can remember back to the Tandy Model 1 days and other PC's and OS's. I will keep an eye on user.dat and system.dat sizes and see what happens. Bazza
