    Hey Guys,
I got to thinking about labeling my Discs( might help when I look through them :-D)
What is the "proper" item to write on them with so it doesn't damage the disc itself?
    Thanks,
    Spock96

Btw, you can also do the label thing and print them out and stick them on if you want to get fancy.

I use a fine point felt tip pen and if i overwrite them i use a cotton bud with Eau de Cologne to clean it off.

Yep, exactly including the cheap aftershave bit :-D. I now have uses for those cheap-o aftershaves I keeps getting given :p. And I have many hundreds like it.
To get professional looking, a printable DVD/CD plus appropriate printer, like Puppy said. 'Course, if you really do a lot, you'll want to do the same with Blu-Ray writers and media, too. ;)
Just write on the DVD's AFTER they have been burnt, as sometimes the black gets picked up by the burner's laser on blanks.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

Also, remember to use common sense caveats:

    1. Be advised that the solvents in some types of inks can potentially damage the disk and, even though the plastic dummy substrate of a single-sided writable CD/DVD disk affords some protection, caution is still in order...

    2. Write only what is necessary to identify the disk (see #1)...

    3. The part of the disk least vulnerable to injury is the center clamping or hub area, so this area should be the optimum writing area...

    4. Full surface or "donut-style" labels are preferable to partial stickers but be careful as any adhesive label can potentially upset the balance of a disk when playing back. This is especially true at high speeds, resulting in excessive noise, vibration and data retrieval problems. Heat, humidity, sunlight, handling and the passage of time can also compromise the stability of adhesive labels resulting in separation from the disk surface and even interference with the drive...

    5. Sticky labels may not be the best choice when archiving important data as some types of label adhesives can react with and undermine the disk over time...

    6. Remember too that, once applied, labels should never be removed or repositioned. Even smoothing air bubbles can concentrate physical stresses in a small area and potentially damage the disk...

    ;)

I actually know what is on each of my disks, based on their position in the various stacks and piles around my den . . . :dood

. . . I only use the sharpie to mark them for my wife's benefit. Yep, for her. Just for her. :innocent
