What virus did I have?

    About a few months ago I had a virus on my computer. I was practically asking for it.. I had no firewall, anti-virus protection, and I was always direct-connecting with random people on aim. Well one day in February the virus hit and my computer had just shut off on its own. At first I didn't think anything of it. I thought a cord came loose or something. It displayed a message saying there was probably a powerfailure or something and that in 20 seconds windows would load up. Well windows started to load, and then my computer would completely shut off again, display and that message, load up windows and then once again crash. This happened repeatedly. Well it turned out that I had a virus that was doing this. After my computer was fixed, all my files and things I had once installed on the computer were gone. I think the person who fixed it did a disk re-format or something. Well, I was just wondering if anyone knows what virus I had. Or what virus it sounds like I had. Thanks guys! :D

    Hi!! Oops forgot to add those details. My operating system is a compaq presario, and I have windows xp. Don't really know about anything else about my computer:eek: . Is there anything else you need to know? Thank you for helping me.

    No probs... but on the info you gave I'm sure it was Blaster... you had it way too early to be Sasser.

    Always make sure as you have XP that you visit windows update but more importantly... Windows Security part of the company as it has all security issues and updates.. generally well in advance of the outbreaks ( in Blaster adn Sassers cases it was around 30 days before the Viruses hit that the patch was available )

    Thanks for your help!!! *Hug* Yay. :) I was practically asking for a virus.. I never installed the windows updates... no firewall, or anti-virus programs. Heh.

    Also when I had the virus my keyboard would stop working from time to time. It wouldn't work for like a minute then it would work... wow.. viruses amaze me. ^_^

    depending on your PC experience ( I really dont want this to sound wrong ) a good choice if you really want an install and forget choices of the above then Avast and ZoneAlarm are two good choices to start with.... easy to install and setup.

    AHH! NO!!! After my whole computer virus experience. The person who fixed my computer, downloaded AVG, I have zone alarm too. And i'm also downloading the windows updates from time to time. Lol don't worry... I have LEARNED my lesson. :)

    You may also find this info helpfull as apart from Virii Trojans and Worms the latest pest is Spyware it can mess up your machine just as much as the above!

    plus a very helpfull program to install is SpywareBlaster it helps to stop spyware being installed in the first place..... I now only get the odd one and Ad-Aware will remove them with ease.
