What works for iPad video?

I've tried several of the free and not so free video converters for iPad. So far I have only been disappointed. The videos are choppy (dropped frames), have audio syncing issues, or very bad pixelation. I'm trying to rip my DVD collection and have wasted many hours trying to get it to work properly.

    I've tried:
    Handbrake
    Prism
    Magic DVD Ripper
    Jobo
and some others that were so bad I deleted them immediately.

If you want quality and speed, look no further than DVDFab DVD Ripper. It's not cheap (40), but it gives great output to just about any mobile format.

Thanks, I tried it and liked the UI. Unfortunately it didn't quite work on my 'test' DVD.

Good video. But audio lagged by at least 10 seconds.

I did this for my daughter's DVD collection before a plane ride a month ago, and got all of them to play on the iPad.

    My steps were:
    1. DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD files.
    2. Handbrake to convert to m4v format with preservation of chapters.
    3. MetaX to collect info including box cover, chapter titles and times, actors, etc.

Worked perfectly, plays on iPad and file size is about 2-3 GB.

All software is free and legal to download.

The only problem were a couple of Disney DVDs that had some special new copy protection (Snow White and Beauty and the Beast). I needed to download DVDFab and DVD43 to rip them. Not sure why, but they seemed able to handle the new copy protection.

WARNIng: one trick on the new Disney DVD is to list many files with the correct size and time length as the true feature film but they are dummy or decoy files.

I've done exactly that process and gotten choppy video and out of sync audio. Two different compters, one with W7 Ultimate and the other with W7 Professional, both 32bit.

    :confused

Hmm. What are the specs of the systems you are trying to this ripping? If you're getting consistently bad results using all the methods mentioned, maybe your system isn't up to the task.

as I said, I've used two different boxes.

1: Gigabyte MB, 2.4Ghz Quad Core, 4 Gigs of PC2 1066 ram, High end video card, tons of fast disk space (around 3.5TB) running W7 Ultimate.

    2: Toshiba 1.8 Dual Core laptop, 3 Gigs of PC2 800 Ram, 500GB running W7 Professional.

I've gotten closest with Handbrake. i.e best quality video and least about of audio syncing, about .5 to 1.5 seconds - still enough to be a problem.

I am able to watch other video on either box, including Direct TV from a HR22 DVR. And the Direct TV app is very heavy and picky. I doubt that it's a processing power issue.

I've got a couple of old XP SP3 boxes still sitting around gathering dust. I'm going to try to use one of them and see what happens. I'll let you know it there's any difference.
