What Would Happen If You Overexceed A PSU's Wattage Capacity?

What happens if you have more components connected to a PSU, and those components are a higher amount put together than the rated PSU wattage can deliever?

    {ATX/& New PSUS}

Also does anyone know how much a standard ATX PSU loses in wattage per year after ownership?

    Thanks

Probably won't boot though everything will spin up etc. As to degradation, between %5 and %20 depending on the quality of the PSU.

iv'e done this twice and it's quite spectacular :-o

a while ago on a p4 agp setup i had a while ago which had been well behaved for some time i might add i decided to treat it to a new graphics card and purchased an saphire x1950 pro
any way i plugged it all in , installed the drivers and everything was fine then i thought to my self i wonder how this graphics card benchmarks ??
so i ran my benchmark program of choice and everything was doing what it should then all of a sudden there was a bright flash a loud bang and a whisp of smoke :(
on inspection the psu had given up
never mind i thought iv'e got another one ( exactly the same as the one that just gone bang ) and fitted that one
luckily it had only taken the psu and no other components the pc was working as it should

soooo..... i thought lets try that benchmark program again
    you can guess the rest

a beefier power supply later and the pc is still running fine to this day :)

the moral of this story is everything might seem fine until you start making your pc work or play a game and one the explosions might not be special effects

That's the difference between a quality PSU and a cheap one, one will just die quietly and one will give you fireworks on its way out. You lucked out twice!:-D That's why I always buy quality and %50 more power than needed as I run my machines harder than most folks ever do, essentially benchmarking the whole system 24/7/365 and highly OC'd.

the psu's were ok it was me chancing my luck :)
switchmode power supplies can be very volatile

the pc was a 3.2 gig p4 clocked at 3.8, 4 gig mem 2 internal dvd writers and cd writer and 5 internal hd's
the psu's were only rated at 400w so were at there limit before the g/card update

the pc is still used today by a friend of mine but has only 1 HD and 1 dvd writer in it now

I never buy a PSU without the following protection:

I won't ever risk my expensive hardware with a cheap PSU, I've seen enough horror stories.

    Hi All,

Most, maybe all, PSUs have over current and voltage plus under voltage protection. It will shut down and refuse to restart until the problem and the AC power is removed. Of course safety circuits have been known to fail to operate properly at times. Also electronics is capable of 1,000,000 errors per microsecond!

    Good Luck, Jim

Dang those are some terrible horror stories! Lol.

Also lol @ Auggiedoggie always on his OVERCLOCKING!

Geez well I think I'm going to buy a better psu for another old pc I have. Better safe than sorry as I'm adding another Burner to it. & well let's just say I've already added enough.

    :p
