I love the old RPG games from Nintendo 8-bit and Super Nintendo. I have all the Dragon Warrior's and Final Fantasy's and want to know if anyone out there can suggest any good RPG games to play. I know some are pretty rare now-a-day's but that's no problem. There's a shop near my house that get's all sorts of old games.

    Thanks.

    Everquest.

If you want a merge of FPS and RPG, then I highly recommend Deus Ex. Hell, i recommend Deus Ex even if you aren't looking for that...

  3. DOA

    DOA MG's Loki

Priston Tale might fill your bill. Free to D/L and free to log in.
If you like a little more adult theme, get KOX. Knights of Xentar. Very cartoony, very fun.
Everquest does not end, after a month I saw it goes nowhere. I am not saying it is a bad game, just that it was designed to make money forever.

Thanks guys. I've heard of Everquest but didn't play it because like DOA said "there is no end". I love playing RPG's but if there is no end, what's the point? I'm going to check out Deus Ex, Priston Tale and KOX later today. I hope they're as good as you guys say.

    Thanks again.

Obi, does morrowind get better? i'e only logged about an hour into it, and it is REALLY annoying that hand to hand combat is soo bad. (I've been into FPS games lately)...

would you recommend sticking to it, or do you think I still wont like it? just wondering:D

  9. DOA

    DOA MG's Loki

Morrowind moves slowly, but is a truely great game.
    1) get the book with the quests, read when you have to
    2) get the boots of blinding speed as soon as you can
    3) get the arena patch so you can get really good items once you deserve them.

Hand to hand really does not get better, but you will.

    Star Wars Galaxies.

Beyond any shadow of a doubt the most immersive and most fun MMORPG out there.

The only negative thought that I have about the game is that Beta Testing will be ending soon so I won't be able to play for free.;)

  11. Kodo

    Kodo SNATCHSQUATCH

I thought it sucked. There is a point where immersivity becomes a hassle and they went WAY beyond that to the point that the game is overly cumbersome to play in the intended real time fashion they were aiming for.

    Also gotta love:

    System Shock 2 (old!)
    Diablo I & II and other Rogue-likes

Anyone heard of The 7th Saga? It's a SNES game... one of the best I've ever played. Right up there with all the Final Fantasy games. It's quite a long game with a pretty good story line as well.

well if we're going back that far :p , the entire "The Lengend Of Zelda" series has been awesome.... except maybe The Adventure of Link, i never really got into that one... it was a poor format in my opinion.

did you know that the original Legend of Zelda changes location and enemies of the entire world 5 times?! i have yet to beat the second world, i'm a long way from visiting the fifth...

    hehe zelda is awesome.

Now you guy's are speaking my language. :D I'm a fanatic when it comes to those old, classic RPG's.

I have the 7th Saga and it kicks ass!

What do you mean by that InYearsToCome? Does a person have to beat the game 5 times to actually finish the game?
I've beaten the second world and the third is the exactly the same as the second. Are you sure?

Also, if anyone can give me more names of classic RPG's for NES and SNES I would really appriciate it. :)

i remember being told that in fact, one must beat the quest 4 or 5 times to "beat the game", however i am trying to verify this with other sources online... but yes that is what i believe

I know that by creating a player named "Zelda" you automatically start on the 2nd quest... but you've already beaten that quest (good job).

i will keep looking and let you know if i find anything.

i also highly recommend playing "A Link to The Past" for SNES if you havent already... it is an awesome game. i wish there was another on that platform....

  21. ColonelAngus

    ColonelAngus Beefy

I should have no problem beating Zelda 4 or 5 times in a row, I can beat the first 2 quest's without dieing once and in about 2 hours time.

I memorized everything in that game and how to do everything in the quickest time possible. It's been awhile though.:D

Oh yah! I've always wanted to know something about the second quest. Where is the Blue Ring? I can find it and the Red Ring in the first quest, but I've never found the Blue Ring in the second Quest.

  22. InYearsToCome

    InYearsToCome MajorGeek

yeah, i cant find anything even hinting about a 3rd quest or anything higher... so maybe i was misinformed...

I think i am gonna start the 2nd quest soon, so if i happen upon the blue ring, i'll let you know:p

  23. ColonelAngus

    ColonelAngus Beefy

Does that mean you've never found the Blues Ring either? Or you have, but you've forgotten?

I don't think so. Some of the old Nintendo games worked that way. I remember a rumor about Super Mario Brothers. It goes as follows: If you beat the games 16 times in a row, you beat the game for real and save Princess Daisy not Toadstool. I've never done it myself because I would always get board doing it.:D

Thanks for the links irox51987. I read the essay that guy wrote about the SNES. I feel the same way. I'm 23 now and when the SNES came out I think I was about 10 and it was amazing! Newer systems have better graphics but they will never be as fun as the SNES was.

Also, I never knew that Paper Mario was an RPG! I stopped following video games when N64 came out. I was not impressed with it. I have one that has been collecting dust for some time now.

As far as Zelda 1, there's only two quests. After you defeat the game the second time, you can continue to play again and again, but AFAIK the map is the second quest map.

The game might change what is where (I don't think so) but all the secrets and entrances are the same.

I'm not sure that this would qualify as an RPG... but it's damn close... ever heard of Shadow Gate or Deja Vu? They were NES games and very similar to each other. I liked Shadow Gate better, because of the content... it was more RPG-like (i.e. magic, gold, and things of that nature). Deja Vu was based in modern day type play... to clarify... you wake up in a bathroom with amesia... you find a gun and go on from there.

Anyway... they are definately RPG-like... and awesome games for their time.

  27. ColonelAngus

    ColonelAngus Beefy

They sure do qualify. Those games are awesome! There is also a third game, it's called The Uninvited. The main character (you) are in a haunted mansion. It's great. I have all three.

Shadow Gate is my favorite of the three also. :)

Actually, those are considered Adventure games, not RPGs.

  29. ColonelAngus

    ColonelAngus Beefy

I do use the term RPG loosely. I guess I should expand this thread to include Andventures too.

What defines an Andventure game and what defines an RPG then?

    I like them both.

  30. †T-Rex †

    †T-Rex † Specialist

Hmmm... exactly how do you define a Role Playing Game? Because if those are adventure games, that's some dry ass adventuring. The screen is still... doesn't move ... when you actually DO command the guy to do something (i.e. pick up, throw, punch..) it doesn't even show THAT. It just shows the result of what happens. No action at all, really... but if you insist... let's classify them as adventure/RPG.

  31. InYearsToCome

    InYearsToCome MajorGeek

defining what exactly an RPG is has become a very heated debate, and I have seen many good editorials from different perspectives, and nearly all of them seem to mention ZELDA since that is the source of many of the arguments.
(I will post the links if anyone would like to see a few)

many refuse to classify Zelda as an RPG because the storyline (of the earlier ones) is "save zelda" (not my opinion, just a common opinion)

however i disagree in that case, because where mario's storyline is a similar "save princess toadstool/daisy", and mario has the same abilities in level 1 as he does in the last level, Zelda's gameplay is MUCH more interactive. Link gets stronger as the game progresses, acquires many new items/weapons, and there is no set order in which levels/dungeouns you explore first, short of ones requiring a certain item to enter (ie, ladder, raft...etc)

i cannot say for the other games mentioned here, since i havent played them, But i'm interested in the reason da chicken doesnt consider them RPG's, so i can decide for myself:)

another good rpg for snes, is Mario RPG. i was very impressed with this game, corny as it may have been,

What I feel for Final Fantasy 1 goes beyond love. That is the best RPG ever! I've played that game so many times. I could write a book on how great it is but I won't. :D

I'd consider them Adventures because I'd imagine that's what they consider themselves. Everything from text-based games from InfoCom (Zork, Wishbringer) to the King's Quest line, to the successful LucasArts line (Indiana Jones, Maniac Mansion, etc), to Myst, to more modern titles like Syberia, and Alone in the Dark.

No combat? Not an RPG. No stats? Not an RPG. Generally speaking, a CRPG has to have stats and character advancement (in addition to plot advancement) to be a true RPG-genre game.

Action-RPGs (Diablo, Nox, and arguably EverQuest) are the direct opposite of adventure games. All character advancement and no plot.

    Deus-Ex: 1st person RPG
    Half-Life: 1st persion action-adventure.
    EverQuest: 1st person action RPG.

    *Shrug* Its all interpretation.

    RPG= Roleplaying game.

If you find yourself playing a particular role and imagining yourself in that role, than that game is an rpg.

So yes, Everquest can be an rpg, if you make it so. So is DAOC.

So are your games like Myst.

Sounds like a full-blown debate to me! In the words of MTV's Celeberty DeathMatch... Let's get it on!

Nah... this debate wouldn't exactly serve any purpose... not like we'd change the classification of games forever or anything. But maybe we should consult the gaming industry and look into the characteristics that make a game an RPG. Hell... they probably don't even know... look at all the new genres of music they've come up with and how they're classified... not exactly like categorizing the species of animals, here... :p

  38. da chicken

    da chicken MajorGeek

All I'm saying is that's generally how the industry classifys them. Drop by gamespot and take a look at the differences between Adventure and RPG. You'll also find some games are in both genres.

  39. ColonelAngus

    ColonelAngus Beefy

The only way to settle this is to come up with a new genre name that can incorporate RPG, Adventure, and Quest games. The new genre shall be called... Games that kick Ass!

    Or RollQuestVenturePG.

  40. †T-Rex †

    †T-Rex † Specialist

Yeah... I understand there are countless opinions and respect that. That's why I posted saying "I didn't know if they qualified as RPGs" because some games confuse me as to what genre they belong to. But I've noticed that as much as I love a good RPG, it goes hand-in-hand with games like Shadow Gate. In other words, it would seem if you're the type of person that enjoys RPG's it's likely that you'll enjoy games like Shadow Gate too.

Secret of Mana was pretty kewl though... agree with you there... thought of another one when I seen Mana... It's a playstation game, but I liked it. Ever played Legend of the Dragoon? Not bad.
