For starters you can check many of your startup items at sysinfo.org. I picked one randomly from your HJT log to show you the info it gives.:) You'll see this particular process has an "N", not required.

You don't appear to be running a firewall, or antispyware application. See this thread on how to protect yourself from malware

There you will find lots of good stuff, including free  Firewall and Anti Virus program options.

Many of use Zone Alarm Free and Avast (or AVG) Anti Virus.
I prefer Avast because it is a no brainer for updates. Bazza

Those amount of processes look normal to me you've got 40 and mines running 52. I think you should be fine but just check with the experts on here just to be safe.

40 processes is not to bad at all,

plus dont forget you have the below that dont run at boot or can be terminated from running at boot in the case of MSN Mess and AIM, as these can be started when you actually need them.. in the case of AIM its actually using 36mb!!

    2x iexplore.exe ( IE ) windows open
    1x msmesg.exe ( MSN Messenger )
    1x AIM ( AOL Instant Messenger )

minus these 4 and your down to 36 running processes

1x Soundman ( which is a sound config icon in your system tray.. this is not really needed as how many times do you really adjust the actual soundchips properties.. plus it can be done from the Control Panel as the same Icon is in their too, so this one can be removed )

minus this one and your down to 35 running processes.

Not bad really and at a guess this is a Laptop? if so thats even better as laptops tend to have a few more running processes than desktops.. mousepad and wireless to name two.
