I'd say the X800GTO. Clock speeds are that bit faster, I seems to remember GTO's being easier to overclock aswell.

i cant find what core the gto has.... but the xl has an R430 core... can that be modded to anything good?
i also noticed that on the pcie versions of the gto they are the same core as the x850xtpe.

    but i need agp....

any recomendations i am lookin for a card that can go far

BUT....the XL has 16 pixel pipes compared to the GTO's 12....you can overclock to make up for the difference in clock speeds

well can either of them be modded to an x850xtpe?

dont know much about ati cards but i do know that you can unlock a 6800gs to full 16 pipes (compared to stock 12) and 1 more shader

i was looking here and it says that the gto is based off the r480 core so im guessing i might be able to mod it to a full x850xtpe?

    http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/video/sapphire-14.html

    its towards the bottom...
    thx

    edit:
    here is what it says:
    # Sapphire RADEON X800GTO AGP 256MB is a similar product, but with more pipelines and reduced frequencies. But we know that the core is R480, so this core is born to be overclocked to 500 MHz or even higher. This accelerator is very popular among overclockers. It's sometimes possible to unlock its pipelines, but in the majority of cases it's impossible.

does that mean you can unlock 4 extra pipes?

    also it says it can reach almost x850xtpe speeds!! Sapphire RADEON X800GTO AGP 256MB - 560/1140 MHz;

Umm the X800GTO is a better overclocker...Problem is...It isn't able to get 16 Pipes on the newer ones if you're lucky newegg just might send you an older one (Mine is older).

But never the less, the GTO is still better OC'er

    Go with this X800GTO:

Some x800GTO's are r430, some are r480. You want R480, it is 16pipes, r430 can only be 12. Get a GTO2, that means its r480 (get a sapphire one). The sapphire ones are now shipping with all 16 pipes enabled, no bios flashing necessary to enable them! :D
    Also, r480 overclocks much better.
Ive got an r430 (the silicone says x800pro on it). It musta been a bunk chip tho, it cant hit x800 pro clockspeeds. But hey, it was free.
But if it were my money, id get this one: http://www.ncix.com/products/index....7466-11-AT (21067-01-20)&manufacture=SAPPHIRE

Hope this helps (the x800gto is a complicated beast, which can have R430 or R480 core, ddr1, ddr2, or dd3 memory, oh my oh my oh my yes, its confusing)

the saphire GTO2 is a great card. I would look into that more. They unlock to x850XT and achieve x850xt-pe clock speeds. its a great bang for your buck ATI card. On the other hand you could look into getting a 7900GT. They are the best preformaning budget card out on the market! get OCer also because they have 90nm core insted of ATIs 110nm cores.

Would be awesome but as he just stated he doesn't have PCI-E....lol

Prices are in canadian, but they ship to the US, while newegg doesnt ship to canada (grrrrrrr)

well see here is my new problem... i was wondering if i should just wait and save more fora new comp with pci e... i mean AGP is fading fast... and i need faster stuff anyway... what you guys think and whats a decent gaming comp cost these days?

  28. viper_boy403

    viper_boy403 MajorGeek

you can get a 7800gs which can keep u goin on AGP for a while. Even a 6800gs/gt/ultra will be good for a while

  29. ChrisC

    ChrisC Private First Class

The 7800GS is quite a few buxs more than the x800gto, but it is the best agp atm.
I just got an Asrock939Dual-Sata2 mobo, is has a full fledged AGP port and a PCI-Express x16 port, uses socket 939 athlon 64's,x2s,1xxseries opteron and ddr. Cheap as chips, overclocks very well and has been (so far) very stable (knock on wood:p ). Also has a port to add a board for AMD's upcoming AM2 cpus's and ddr2 ram (am2 not a good idea in the short term, the ram to make it equal is very pricey, to make it faster, its scary.). But its future proof. No gige, but u dont have it now either, it dont matter for internet anyway.
So, all you need is the mobo ($85 canadian from ncix.com), and a socket939 cpu ($180 and up at ncix). If you want to go dual core, get the opteron 165, its the cheapest (gotta buy a HSF tho, so its actually not:p), it OC's very well and has 1mb cache and has to meet opteron quality control which is tougher then X2's, but i digress.
Since your ram is different, it might not work in dual channel. So you'll lose a bit of performance, itll have the same memory performance as your board.
But, you get to keep all your current gear, and maybe wait to get a next generation card (1600 / 7600 range, ie, midrange). The next gen will have directX10 support, as windows vista (when it ships, nobody knows :p ) ships with it. The wait will give you time to save up for it. So you can migrate from AGP to PCI-E painlessly :)
