I am trying to run Firefox ( v3.0.4) now, so I can check my email. Nothing appears to happen. I try more than once, then I check Firefox help and it informs me it is downloading v 3.0.5 wihout even bothering to ask me. Checking MG, I find that v3.0.5 is for Portable Firefox? :confused

Correct version for the non-portable Firefox is v3.3.0.5 according to MG.
Is this just a typo by Firefox help, or what?

Anyhow, the download doesn't appear to do anything and I am stuffed once more.

    Any suggestions /advice?
Maybe I should just download v3.3.0.5 from MG, and bypass Firefox trying to "help" me.

Thanks Mark. Just to confuse me even more, MG has a heading of Mozilla Firefox 3 3.0.5 at http://majorgeeks.com/download2248.html, but when you go to download it, it just points to v3.0.5. (not the Portable version). :confused

It is very easy to confuse me. :-D Bazza

Look at it this way, FF 3 means any version starting with 3, such as 3.0.4 or 3.0.5. So, it's Firefox 3, as opposed to, say, Firefox 2, and the specific version is 3.0.5.

3.0.5 is, indeed, the latest standard, i.e. non-portable, version (excluding any beta version in development).

Hey BigBazza. You didn't hear that from anybody here.

    bigbazza R.I.P. 14/12/2011 - Good Onya Geek

I restate. MG refers to it as v3.3.0.5, |MG| Mozilla Firefox 3 3.0.5 at http://majorgeeks.com/download2248.html which is completely different to FF3, v3.0.4 or v3.0.5

Portable Firefox is referred to as Portable Firefox 3.0.5 at MG.

A good rule of thumb, when any program gets screwed up, is to just UN-Install it completely and download and install the latest version.

By the way, Firefox 3.1 Beta 2 is out and running just fine, for anyone that's interested.

I've been using it for several days already.

V 3.0.5 was just the natural progressive upgrade from 3.0.4. It really works fine.

    Merry Christmas Everyone!

    I must admit that I didn't un-install v3.0.4 before updating to v3.0.5
It appeared to work OK. I would have thought that the new version would have picked up my speed dial settings. It didn't, and didn't ask.

I tried Firefox Help for Speed Dial and it didn't know anything about Speed Dial. Would you believe it.

I went to Add-ons, downloaded and installed Speed Dial and rebooted FF as directed. Nothing. Rebooted my PC and loaded FF again, nothing.

As you may appreciate I only use Firefox for my email. I don't want to spend lots of time delving into the idiosynchrasies of FF. I much prefer Opera. At least that transfers your previous Speed Dial links.

All help /suggestions appreciated, especially to load my previous FF Speed dial links. Bazza

Umm, you're inserting v where there is no v in the MG download page. I read it this way: Mozilla Firefox 3 (v3.0.5). Its Firefox 3, specifically version 3.0.5; I don't how else to say it. Look, MG screwed up in labeling the software on that download page; they should named it in the same pattern that they named the portable version; that's all there is to it. Can we move on?

Yes we can. Now can someone tell me how to get my Speed Dial links skowing up as the default page when I boot up FF. Bazza

Guessing FF is working and you want to add SpeedDial to your start page on the toolbar or customize?

To add right click empty spot on toolbar > Customize > select SpeedDial (add-ons are on the bottom) drag it to the toolbar. From there you have to go into Options in SpeedDial for further customization.

    This might help http://speeddial.uworks.net/gettingstarted.html

Thanks for that. I got 50% to work. :-D I now have Speed Dial in the Toolbar and have to click on it to make it appear. I can now get into my email again. :major :cool

Can you explain further, so I can have it Speed Dial option appear as my FF homepage.

    Thanks again, Bazza

Speed Dial is standard equiptment on Opera. Didn't know about Firefoe because I very seldom use it. I wonder how they compare.

  18. hrlow2

    hrlow2 MajorGeek

That may be so. Opera may have cost at one time before I started to use it, but it is currently freeware.
It may also have a much smaller user base than Firefox, but to me, that is a plus for the extra protection. Malware writers go for the larger targets first because they have a better chance of success.
And I have used Firefox and Opera, and I have found Opera to be faster.

It's really all about what a person is comfortable and familiar with. Find one you like, get it set up your way, and all is right with the world. I do occasionally use Firefox, but for me, it"s Opera. IE is just for getting updates.

Thanks. I have it working at 50% (see earlier post -- #16). I now need it to display Speed Dial open, on my FF home page, when I have to use it. I know it can be done, I had it before, I just forget how. :-o Bazza

    This??

To make it your home page it gets setup in the opening (first time run) page, you have to go into that options page again.

Tools> Add-ons> Extensions> Speed Dial> Options> Advanced> Settings (at the bottom)> (up to) First Time Configuration> Check "Set Speed Dial As Home Page.

    1. Click the White Arrow next to the SpeedDial icon
    2. SpeedDial Options (click)
    3. Advanced Tab
    4. Settings (click) <at the bottom left>
    5. First Time Configuration (click)
    6. Check "Set SpeedDial as Home Page
    7. OK (click)

Thanks Cat_w_9_lives and Buck_nekid. :cool I don't use FF enough to know all its in's and out's. I will be doing your solutions as soon as I have finished with my daily MG session. Bazza

    Well I tried both solutions.
I get through to check "Set Speed dail as home page" OK.
I check the box and "OK" and "OK" to exit.
    The tick does not stick.
When I go back again to the same spot, the tick has vanished.
Any further suggestions / bright ideas ? I am confused, still. Bazza

PS: I tried rebooting. I tried ticking "On" all 5 boxes. Nothing makes any difference. :cry

Make sure that your security programs (and even CCleaner) is not set to lock in the home page so no changes can be made.

Bigbazza, don't know if you were able to solve the FF homepage problem. Here are some instructions that I obtained from Mozillazine forum:

Tools > Options > Main - In the 'When Firefox Starts' option select 'Show my home page. Underneath copy and paste this in:

    chrome://speeddial/content/speeddial.xul

Then click OK at bottom on the Options Manager.

According to Post of Dec 28/08 by keithy http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=540112&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=375

Hope it's not a duplicate of instructions you received in previous posts because I can hardly see the attachments.

Thanks oma. I'll give it a try. :major I had just given up and I click on the Speed Dial icon instead. As I mentioned, probably many times, I prefer Opera for daily usage and don't really want to delve into, and learn, Firefox. Bazza
