What's going on with my laptop?

I have a Gateway NV52 and just recently something weird has been happening to my screen. It'll start getting really bright, like it's turning up the screen brightness by itself (I have it set to as dim as it can be) the task bar will turn a weird color, and also the screen will go completely black. I caught this in a video took with my iPod, after the screen goes black I touch the touch pad to make the display come back, and shortly thereafter the screen will flash again and go back to normal. Oh yeah and I have all the setting for turning off the display and whatnot set to never when plugged in. (which it is) Does anyone have any idea what's going on with it?

You can view the video on here: http://youtu.be/oYJJUkJceDY

It does seem to only happen when I let my computer just sit there, thanks I'll give that a try. :)

Nope that didn't do it. It still did it after letting my computer sit, although this time it didn't make the screen go black, just the weird color thing with the task bar and making the screen get all bright.

The last time I had gone to gateway's website to try to get drivers they were all missing for my laptop, they're back now, so maybe I'll try checking to see if there's anything else that can be updated with the drivers they have to try to see if that fixes it. In the meantime if anyone else has any idea what the problem is, I'd really appreciate any feedback on what it could be.

    Hook up an external monitor.
    1. If the screen changes happen on the external monitor, it could mean the video chip on your motherboard is going bad. Unfortunately, in a laptop, you can't easily change the video chip.
    2. If the screen on the external stays good but the laptop goes bad then you'd be looking at things like the connection cable between the computer and the monitor or the capacitors and blacklight on the screen display. This also is not a do-it-yourself project.

I just tried that with my desktop computer's monitor, and yep it still does that. So from what you're thinking it could be the video card going bad. Thanks for the help/input. Guess I'll be going to best buy tomorrow! Cause I have geek squad coverage so if it is the video card going bad, that will get replaced, I'm just not looking forward to being without my computer for who know how long while it's getting repaired.

    Thanks again for the help!

Sorry for the late reply but what I've just seen on that video looks like the basic power saving features in windows?

The first one dims the display after inactivity or when you remove the AC,the second one blacks out the display after inactivity.

First check the power saving features in windows, control panel/power options and disable them all.

The second thing it could be is a faulty or loose power socket,if the computer detects the AC has been disconnected even through a fault it will dim the screen, make sure your AC is properly connected to the laptop and also make your the cable to the adapter box is properly connected also, that one always catches me out.

If you've already sent it to be repaired ignore:)

I know it's not the power savings thing, for one that doesn't mess up your task bar, for another, it doesn't make the screen get brighter. I have the screen brightness set as dim as it can be, and all of turn off display etc. options for when it's plugged in (which it always is, batteries don't last very long) are set to never. But I brought it to geek squad, and they're gonna run some diagnostics to figure out what's going on. I showed them that video too and he was like hmm yeah that is weird. lol

So I got my laptop back from them Sunday. Apparently there was nothing wrong with it (weird I know) all their tests found that there was no hardware problems, and no virus's or spyware, and it never did that for them. They did however blow out the dust inside it, and uninstalled the video drivers and installed the newest version.

It hasn't done that since I got it back, but Monday when I first turned it on, as soon as windows loaded so you could see the desktop etc. my task bar was that weird blue color, then it disappeared completely leaving behind just the start button, then the screen flashed and it came back it's normal color. However it hasn't done that again since. So it's really weird, I'm kinda thinking that maybe when they had it before to fix the problem with the power switch (they replaced the power button cable) I'm kinda thinking that maybe something was kinda knocked a little loose or something during shipping? And then it got pushed back into place or something when they opened it up to blow out the dust. Only thing I can really think of. lol So hopefully it won't ever do that again!
