How did your city/town get its name.
Liverpool! Some people reckon its named after the cormorant or liver bird, others think it derives from the seaweed lava that was used to make lava bread.

Brugge is self explanatory (if you speak dutch) it literally means Bridge.

The city is inside a ring of water and the only way in is over bridges. (7 of them)

Also famous as the birthplace of Charles Dickens.

@Tony, yeah its been a long fought thing as to the origins of the name Liverpool, its name has chnaged over the years with one I can remember being Liuerpul in 1190 (iirc) and the name in part being linked to Welsh names as in Llif (which means flood) and pool being a port or river pool so maybe its meaning is FloodPool :)

My old home town in Sweden got it's name from an old Sami word that translates roughly into "to make thunderous noise". It's named after the river next to the city, the Uma River. The town is called Umea.

The right outside of town looks like this, by the way. That's below the mountains, through the "flat lands" going down towards the coast. Up in the mountains it's even nicer. And louder... :)

    Philadelphia

I think maybe they knew it was going to be a really dirty city and people could call it Filthadelphia.

Actually, Philadelphia was named by William Penn and means 'city of brotherly love' in Greek, ironically enough (considering Philadelphians are not known for their friendliness)

Comstock Park was originally called Mill Creek, because the creek running through town is called Mill Creek. Yes, there used to be a mill. ;) But then along came Charles C. Comstock, who ran several sawmills and a furniture company in nearby Grand Rapids (which used to be the home of incredibly high quality furniture), and who also was the mayor of Grand Rapids and ran a failed campaign for governor of Michigan. He eventually became a US Congressman.

Why my town decided to rename itself after him is a mystery. We're an independent community about 5 miles outside Grand Rapids, and he never lived here or owned any businesses here.

The nearby town to where I live was named after English bare-knuckle boxer, Abednego William Thompson.

Prior to 1891 it was known as Sandhurst, then renamed Bendigo. Gold was discovered in 1851. There are operating mines in the region still.

Recently a portrait of the boxer was purchased by a private buyer at auction and is to be loaned to our Art Gallery for display.

I've heard of that one Halo, Llif also translates into lake or pool so Liverpool could even be Poolpool
As you know I live in Hale and it gets its name from the great Hall or Halle and over the years via the spoken word it turned into Hale.

Begins to look like we're getting a bit of a world history lesson. where's JOTS with his Oldcastle

The English name Tucson derives from the Spanish name of the city, Tucsón [tukˈson], which was borrowed from the O'odham name Cuk Ṣon [tʃʊk ʂɔːn], meaning "(at the) base of the black [hill]", a reference to an adjacent volcanic mountain. Tucson is sometimes referred to as "The Old Pueblo". :cool
