I was given my first computer 7 years ago (my brother in-law gave me his as he was going to live abroad). At that point I could write a word document and save it, I could browse the web and send an email. That's where it ended.
The skills I have today are all self acquired through trial and error. I have built several computers, have built and run a web site, have spent many hours cleaning virii and spyware from infected machines, among other things. I think having developed a real interest has really shot me up the learning curve, but so has being helped by talented computer enthusiasts at places like MG. So thanks peeps.:D

I learned from trial and error (mostly error) and from conducting searches for solutions to my own computer probs. There was a man named 'Jitta' who had a computer help site on MSN Groups and he taught me a lot. He made me an asst. Mgr. at his site and that's when the REAL learning began. I believe you learn most when you are looking for answers for someone else's problems. Whenever I run across info that I think may be helpful in the future I copy it and save it in a folder called 'Troubleshooting'.
I love the learning experience here! MG members have turned me on to a lot of info hard to find otherwise.
Having a love of computers and the technology is a major plus! You always excel at something you truly enjoy doing! ;)

I have a B.A. in psychology with a concentration in Neuroscience and an ASC in web development (this past september). prior to getting my ASC, I was self taught. All that hard work paid off because I graduated Salutatorian.

I'd pick a technical school and go there over a traditional school.

Did Computer Science 'A" level at school, but that was many, many years ago and everything has been self-taught since then. I also have a degree in Business Studies.

Self taught for the most part, through trial and error and trying to help others, that have absolutely no understanding of computers!! In the meantime I have acquired my A+ certification and am currently studying for my Network+ certification...and we'll see where it goes from there!!

I hardly know anything! But what I do know about computers I taught myself. Right now I'm being trained as the new 'Tech Guy' at my job. That will teach me a lot.

Self Taught. And its my job now so I guess that gives you experience which in many cases is more useful than a qualification. But then sometimes a qualification is pretty damned helpful in an interview too, which is why I am doing an MCSA at the moment.

    I be borderline genius :)

Alot of tech knowledge was gained in the years working in the photo industry ( did some projects for Kodak on PC based lab systems and training at Fuji ), mainly high end computer based digital printers and processors, image manipulation as my further education was art school, graphic design and corporate id, with a mish mash of business studies, art history, engineering design, social economic studies and project planning.. thrown in at the same time.

Now learning or eyeballing my way through ophthalmology ( disease research.. ARMD mainly and Diabeties occasionally ), bit of an eye opener for something small to be so complex

Oh yes, hands on is definatly the way to learn alot, its fine for someone to tell or show you but actually having hands on is a great way to learn more, yes you may make mistakes but hey we learn from them.

Self taught, and lots of reading PC mags and Computer related books.
I go back over 25 years, to a Tandy Model 1 with cassette drive, and the great 80 Micro magazine.

Through all versions fo DOS from 3.1, 3.11 WFWG, 4 (yuk), 5.0 (loved it), 6.0 and 6.2.
Windows 95, 98SE and now XP Pro.

As for hardware, early laptops like a Tandy 4p, Epson luggable 386SX, desktops from an IBM compatible 286. Built up various 386's, 486's, Pentiums up to P2's.

Now have a Toshiba Tecra A7 duo-core Laptop.

I worked in 2 or 3 computer shops, selling, servicing PC's, installing hardware and software. In my various mining jobs as an Inventory Controller, I also doubled as a tech support guy within our Supply department, sometimes with, sometimes without, the IT departments blessing.

I joined MG a couple of years ago and have learn't a hell of a lot here.
Try to help others out here, if I can. Bazza

I did a few Computer Sciences classes in highschool, and got hooked on programming.
So, I attended and graduated from RCC College of Technology as a Computer Network Engineering Technician.

That's not to say that I'm not mostly self-taught. The thing about IT is that there's SO much to learn, you could spend your life in a classroom, and not do anything practical....

Started out playing on Apple 2's back in the late 70's, worked up through the commodore 64 (still can work in DOS too) then onto Win3X and never looked back. A lot of self teaching, a lot of hanging out and learning from others, took a few classes at BOCES and did a lot of trial and error, asked a lot of questions here and other sites and generally worked on it myself. over the years.

Funny thing is, I have certs as a Phlebotomist (drawing blood), Emergency Medical Technician, Nortel, C-Tech. I am trained as a trainer for OSHA and HIPAA, I have my cosmetology license and am a certified firefighter as well. *looks @ Kodo* Mine's bigger than yours is )8^P LOL

Funny thing is, until I started thinking and typing them out, I really hadn't realized just what I've done over the years.... LOL @ me

lol, ok then... I have my A+ cert, win95/98 cert, win 2000 cert, MS Access 2000 cert. Going for my MSCD soon as well. My name appears in the credits for 2 video games (Ballistic & Bandits:phoenix rising by Grin) and I did 6 of the available winform code tutorials that are on the Microsoft's express series of .NET video tutorials. I've also been published as part of a research paper on Alzheimers as well as having developed a new method for transferring neural tissue of a rat brain from a microtome to the glass slides which reduced the overall time to slide a rat brain from 4 hours to just over 2.

Wow, alot of self taught people. Cool. My very limited tech knowledge comes from MG/s and WildersSecurity Forums, where the good people have walked me through many viruses and other problems. Im about to start attending JC classes also for programming (Im majoring in computer science right now but its going sorta slow), I wanna get into programming but dont know anything about it.

  24. G.T.

    G.T. R.I.P February 4, 2007. You will be missed.

That's how I got started. I was hired as a parts manager for a small aircraft repair company, JUST before they took delivery of their first ever computer system. TRS80 business puter running Unix with smart terminals. I got volunteered to be the official computer guy/contact for the company, partly because I was the only one that had ever worked on a computer, and partly because since I WAS the parts/purchasing department, I had to build the inventory/pricing database from scratch. Spent a bloody lot of unpaid overtime, but got hooked on computing. By the time they switched to networked PCs and DOS, I was basically doing it all, only calling the computer support people when I got stuck. Ended up doing hardware software, network, backups and restoring when necessary, replacing hardware as necessary, you name it. Did that through Win98, then moved to Memphis, where I just USE computers all day.

But I've been building my own since 1995, and between computer mags and websites, have stayed pretty current, although I'm no longer the guru that some around here are. Cohorts at work normally ask me their questions before trying to get IT's attention, although without Admin access, I'm limited in what I can do for them unless it's something simple.

I'm mostly self-taught. I'll be a sophmore in college in Jan 2007. I have learned A LOT from this site, even though I'm a fairly new member. I also used to work at Hewlett Packard, building computer servers for the company.. and that is how i mustered up the confidence to build my own PC. I've only built one but I'm sure I could do it all over again :) I'm very happy with this one, probably for a very long time. I started out with PCs about 6 years ago, with Windows ME. Then I went to W2k and then WinXP. I'm currently putting forth a lot of my time working around in Linux SuSE. The transition has been quite difficult thus far but I've noticed I'm spending fewer hours on my WinXP partition.

p.s. - If anyone knows of a DVDShrink for Linux, or how to properly set it up via Wine, and also.. the game Call of Duty 2, Haven't even tried it with Wine yet, anyone know if it works?
