I recently bought a new computer and as soon as it was up 'n' running I went to check a few things out, mainly the clock speeds, cpu temp and voltages, etc... Shockingly the cpu was running at 36 Degrees Celsius when idle. Knowing this was pretty high I did all sorts of things to bring down the temp but to no avail... it still runs hot...or does it?... Im not really sure what this cpu is spec'ed to run at (tempurature wise) but it seems hot to me. I dont get crashes during games or long instances of use but this high temp is worrying me and I dont want to have to replace yet another pc... here are some average temps the my pc emits...

    Idle..................................................... 35 - 40 Degrees Celcius
Low workload (music and visualizations)..... 45 - 55 Degrees Celcius
    Heavy workload (3D gaming).................... 50 - 65 Degrees Celcius

Help... If this cpu/pc burns up on me my computer days are over as I cant afford to get another... any input would be greatly appreciated... thanks in advance...

Shockingly?!?!? Thats a great Idle temp for any processor, really. Those temps are simelar to mine and I have a Athlon XP 3000+. If its a northwood core, the load is a little high. If its a prescott (which it looks like it is...), thats well within limits, which is shown by the fact you dont get any crashes, or slowdowns (the p4 throttles when it gets near its limit).

    You're fine! :)

On a side note, does anyone know how to find out whether a P4 is a northwood or a prescott core processor easily? I've been trying to search online shops and very rarley do they actually tell you what core it has, and if they do they often do not have all the models that were available. e.g. on the site that I use regularly, although the cores were listed, there was no 2.66GHz P4 processor listed with 800FSB.

Just found out. Nothwood have 512kb or l2 cache, prescotts have 1MB.

So, I take that back, load temps might be a bit high for a northwood. I'll check it out.

Ok, I've done some research (which I should have in the first place, doh!) and it seems that any P4 starts to get into trouble at around 80C. Northwoods shutdown around 94C, after throttling, and Prescotts manage to work at over 100C. Crazy. Mind you thats with the fan turned off.

So your temps are still fine, sorry for all the posting weirdness
