Really hating W10 file explorer's inability to find files. Not interested in indexing all my data.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a free or low cost appl to search files? Obviously I'd want one I can download from a safe, reputable source.

    Thanks,

    Mac

Nothing beats Everything for filenames. Cannot search within files though.

Thanks. Unfortunately I need to search both.

Yeah, went with Agent Ransack. Can't believe how lame W10 is. Can't even find things. Well, maybe you have to index for Windows.

    Thanks.

I'm using a Win10 machine with the recent May update.

When I hit the Start button and then type "Index", the window that appears looks nothing like what's shown. Instead, I get this window, and it does not have the described "Indexing Options" in it:

    What am I doing wrong?

Can't say why typing Index takes you down the wrong road but if you type Control Panel in Search and select Small Icons at top right and then click on Indexing Options you will be ok.

Strange. All I can tell you is I get the Index window immediately, next to 'Best Match', more 'Settings', Store, etc. listed on the left.

I will say I find W10 entirely wonky and will do weird things, like open the wrong folder, not apply changes, weird glitchy windows flash as it runs some code, etc. Just buggy in my book. Search and Backup are a perfect example of poor parts of W10. Unless you indeed must index, Search does not find files that should be easily found. From what I've researched online you should not have to index for Search to work. Apparently poor search has been an issue reaching back to W7.

In any event, I'd just close the Network Connections window and go to File Explorer. (But since that wasn't even able to find a file with two words in it I had to find a 3rd p appl.)

    Good luck.

Sounds like your W10 has quite a few problems. Was it buggy before the May update? I have it on three systems and it is remarkably stable and well behaved.

I am also surprised that my Windows 10 does not have such problems,it is ok.

    Hmmmm.
    Well -
I was following another thread in this forum that talked about Index. It said to type "index" in the Search box so I did and what to my surprise ..:D.. I got what I was supposed to get.
I posted my question about a month ago and have no idea what I was doing at the time or why I made that post (sometimes I can't remember what I did half a minute ago...
Yes, my Windows has not choked yet and it's been stable and well behaved since I installed it in 2017.
Thanks to all of you for replying !
