Well .. as the title says ..
whats the best Firewall to use ? my XP SP2 x32 firewall aint enough ..

I dont care if its freeware or you need to pay for it ...
I prefer something good that isnt too heavy on the resources .. although it doesnt matter now that I have 1g of ram ..

As you will have gathered XPs Firewall is only a token gesture and not really a 100% firewall as it leaks like a sieve.

Best firewalls are the stand alone ones if you want minimal resources used, to that end a Routers will block most traffic inward and something like Outpost ( free/paid ) would work for a 2nd-ary incoming firewall and alert you to outgoing traffic.

ZoneAlarm Free is fine as is Sygate.

Test a few out and see whaich one you like?

I think I will go back to my norton firewall ..
I used to have norton internet security 2005 pro .. and it took alot of ram .. but now that I have 1g. It doesnt really matters so I will give it a go ... ;)
and post my impressions here ...

A recent FW comparo put Kerio at the top - but I don't think there is a "free" version other than for a trial period. But ZoneAlarm is excellent if you are careful to follow the instructions TO THE LETTER when installing - uninstalling or updating it. I use Sygate, partly because it isn't such a PITA when you want to change something and partly because it is integrated with the utility suite I prefer for Windwoes - VCom's (www.v-com.com) SystemSuite 5 or 6.

You should probably try out the new NIS 2006 as it has improved I have heard ;) If you are going too use a free firewall then I recommend Sygate Free. And for a paid firewall then I recommend Outpost Firewall Pro.

I'll put in a good word for ZoneAlarm. I've been using the free edition for quite awhile. I've read lots of good reviews of it. Doesn't conflict with my Avast AV either.

I have used both Sygate and Zonealarm, and I would recommend Zone alarm.

Free for personal use , not a bad deal for the best firewall i've ever used.

Well .. I also heard of the new NIS2006 ..but I only need a firewall .. so I will check for Norton Firewall 2006 ..(do they have it in Pro version ?)

cause I already got a great anti-virus .. Kaspersky personal pro .. and Im so happy with it ..
its very low on temp. and block some net attacks and also .. great AV software that detected alot of stuff and kinda saved my pc couple of time ;)

I use Kerio Personal Firewall. Tis free and again, does what I need it to do without being a pain in the rear end....

ZoneAlarm is free it works and it uses only a tiny bit of resources, unlike Norton.

ZoneAlarm is good in the free edition. But ZoneAlarm Suite is awesome, it has AV and antiSpyware. I am slightly dishonest though, I downloaded it and I use it alothough I haven't paod for it. Naughty, but thanks to BitTorrents, my ethics have gone way down for paying for software since I was put out of a job.

I'm still using Norton Personal Firewall 2002, although it's hardly the same firewall as the original, with all the updates that have been installed from running Norton's LiveUpdate. I don't find it to be a resource hog, not at all.

As far as free ones, I've installed ZoneAlarm on two computers for other people and I think it's a good product.

I have a router but use ZoneAlarm (free) for any bad boys
    trying to call out.
I have the Microsoft firewall switched off.
I have used Zone Alarm for a long time w/zero problems.

Yeah, Kaspersky is a good antivirus the new 2006 suite looks promising with lots of new added features too it. Theres just Norton Personal Firewall 2006 (as that is the pro version)If you want too keep your firewall free just use Sygate Free or Zone Alarm Free.

I have used Sygate and Zone Alarm, the free one, and I personally like Sygate better. Zone Alarm slowed down my machine a little, while Sygate doesn't hinder preformance at all.I had Kerio too, but that was incompatible with something on my machine, so I had to get rid of it.

Jan 2006 is one slated release date, but as its still early beta... I wouldnt hold too much to that date, more think of sometime Q1 2006.

I've been testing firewalls this weekend found that I could not get Outpost free to connect to the internet (svchost would not permit connections). However it lookslike it has some good features and I was wondering if anyone here has Outpost FREE, if they got it to work properly, and also if they took the "Test" at http://www.pcflank.com/test2.htm. If it performed well at PCFlank then it might be worth it to try and install again, but at this point I don't know.
