What's the best memory optimizing software that really works, helping for freezes?

  1. What's the best memory optimizing software that really works, helping with freezes and slowness?

FreeRAM XP Pro failed me. FreeRAM XP Pro would do its memory-grabbing thing for several minutes bringing everything to a halt. But after it finished, my browser would be unresponsive for quite some time. I had to disable it, because the remedy was worse than the condition.

I know I need more RAM, but I'm at my ceiling, and I am not going to make an impulsive purchase of a new computer without adequate research.

A program named CleanMem has been recommended. I've also come across a program called MemZilla. Its site says : "Normally when you perform tasks on your computer such as opening a document, viewing pictures or movies or browsing the internet, your computers physical memory called RAM is used, when you close your favorite programs some but not all of the memory used by the program is released back to the system to be used for launching other programs, this results in your computer relying on virtual memory or hard disc space used to simulate RAM, which is slower to read and write compared to Physical RAM memory, thus slowing down your computer. MemZilla works by freeing up this wasted RAM memory when you close your apps to be released fully so they can be used to launch your favorite apps faster and with less reliance on virtual memory."

Anybody familiar with either of those?

CleanMem is the best I've used, the vast majority of the others are completely worthless.

If you get freezes outside of running one of the bad 'optimisers', it could be hardware or paging file fragmentation/auto-sizing.

Also, keep at least 25% of your hard drive space free; if you have a fairly big drive and plenty of free space, you don't need to defrag so often - perhaps quarterly would be enough.

Could you elaborate? Fragmentation shouldn't be a problem with me, since I have PageDefrag running at every reboot.

Ive seen a lot of votes for CleanMem here and on another of my threads. Will be doing that soon.

Thanks for the link, cipher. A lot to digest there. I'm finding that how many tabs I have up on my Pale Moon seems to predict its memory load less well than how long it's been running. I have gotten big memory readings with only a handful. Clicking out tabs does not seem to lower the load in the same session. Did you ever try Memory Fox (what I have now) before settling on firemin?

If you set the paging file to a fixed size, it can't expand and cause pagefile fragmentation and you won't need to run PageDefrag at boot. Hardware problems, esp. drive errors, are a frequent cause of freezes.

Which Windows and Pale Moon version are you running, if you're on the latest PM, try reinstalling it from a fresh download, there may have been a bug in the initial release.

Hardware details would be good, too.

CleanMem is the best one I have used by far.

If you try CleanMem, make sure to make extensive use of the "Ignore List" for programs you want running fully. Programs for the "Ignore List" for my PC include Explorer.exe, ProcessGovernor.exe, GBoost.exe, JetBoostTray.exe, programs that run for periods of time at high processor use such as FBackup, exe, video converters, video editors, and full featured photo editors (Paint.NET), system utilities such as defragger, uninstaller, and anti-virus, document programs such as all the MS Office programs and LibreOffice, media players, video recorders and television viewer, security scan programs such as Mbam and SAS, gaming browser (Firefox), Sanboxers (Toolwiz Timefreeze), and finally docks.

This is a very good program, but only if the "Ignore List" is put to good use.
