What's the best software to show what's taking up disk space?

My wife's laptop is almost full and has been too full for a healthy defrag for some time.

I have downloaded programs before (on other low disk space computers) and some helped and some were confusing.) What free program would you recommend? To see what's taking up all the space? Her Laptop runs a Vista x64.

The problem with all of them is that you need to know whether it's safe to delete/move/compress the files/folders you see there - it takes some experience.

 

I've become partial to SpaceSniffer.
WinDirStat is another one that is similar to Sequoia view.

As satrow has said stay out of the Windows folders and look for large files that you may have downloaded and forgotten about. I always find some large file that I was going to try out but never got around to exploring. Just be sure you know what a file is used for before removing.

 

I've seen a tool that integrates into Windows Explorer (for XP) and offers new columns for "Folder Size" and a few others, but I can't remember the name or where I found it. Anyone know what I'm talking about? (Obviously, I don't!) I know it's not Scanner or FolderSize...

I also like JDiskReport, and I like it. Unfortunately it requires Java (JRE) which in turn takes up quite some disk space.

 

Directory Report is NOT free. It costs $25.

I'd rather save my $25 and spend it on computer hardware instead of software!
