Are Ad-Aware & Spy Bot Search and Destroy enough? Or is there some new/better programs out?

Those two are good enough for the majority of people here.

I mainly use Ad-Aware, rarely scan with anything else, BUT I am lucky because its my pc alone and I dont download web installers like Gator, visit porn sites or take other risks in having my machine infected. On average, when I scan, the programs only find a few cookies that are not spyware anyhow. Now, went and scan the kids machine the other day and he had 207 spyware items. Glad hes not using my machine! If your machine is infected regularly, use both :)

I have found for the best effect that using both does a more complete job than just one or the other.

And MA gets his pRon from me ;)

    Spyware

Spybot and Ad-aware do a great job, and they are free. I myself like Kodo also use both, since they both tend to find stuff the other does not from time to time.

You can find Spybot at: Majorgeeks spyware section
    and Ad-aware at:
    Majorgeeks spyware section

yep a combination of those two or spysweeper ( which I use ) is great to mop up the ones the other misses as updates sometimes miss one or two until next update.

Aslo get yourself Spywareblaster as it stops a majority from being installed in the first place and leaves the above apps only a few to mop up

    get Spywareblaster from http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2859.html

    Re:Spyware Stuff

    Hi Guys,

Looks like most people use AdAware with something else running alongside. Me? I use AdAware, SpywareGuard, and SpywareBlaster, all of which I downloaded from Major Geeks site, and I find them very effective indeed. After installation, and initial AdAware in-depth scan, I rarely find anything new on my system, and only scan once a week now, prior to doing an archival backup of my C:\ drive.

    Cheers, Omigosh.

I also use ad-aware and spybot, but rarely if ever do I find anything on spybot that ad-aware left behind. I do have spywareblaster installed too and keep them all updated with the latest. :)

That's all very well saying that, but it is trusting to luck! I visited an academic site to do research into Irish Gaelic, or Erse if you will, to find a BHO and a nasty Trojan trying to get onto my system. You don't have to visit porn sites--are there any out there--to catch a nasty!
Thank goodness for SpywareBlaster and Kaspersky Anti-Virus.

    Keep clean and safe.http://www.majorgeeks.com/vb/images/icons/icon7.gif

I am not having a go at you mate, but I'm glad you weren't looking for my approval or disapproval because that was not what was on offer. I am also on the internet every day, 7.00AM to Midnight, but you don't have to travel far, no matter how carefully you go, for all sorts of junk to try and get access to your system. You're right, though, keeping it out is not a matter of luck--it is having some good protection installed on your system in the first place! It's not enough to rely on common sense in any walk of life; once upon a time it was common sense to believe that the world was flat!
If common sense was the answer, then it would be to advise bbrich, or anyone else for that matter, to install some decent protection on their system, and leave it at that. Sure, it's only a computer, and none of us would die if it went up in smoke, but then that could also be said if you came home and found squatters in your apartment.http://www.majorgeeks.com/vb/images/icons/icon12.gif
