whats the difference between vista oem and vista retail

    im getting a bare bones computer and i asked to have a version of vista 64 bit oem to be shipped along with it. whats the difference between oem and retail? also if i did assemble this bare bone computer would i be able to install windows vista oem into it? the vista i will use is home premium 64 bit. . .

    Generally OEM is produced bulk for different companies (Dell, HP, etc) so they can build whole systems and sell them and offer a better price. They don't have the packaging and all that. Not sure about the warranty. It's also not transferable from one machine to another. It goes with the system it was installed on. There's no difference quality wise.


    As far as your system, it would depend on your specs.

    OEM means Original Equipment Manufacurer. The difference is that an OEM operating system is bought at a store and can be put to any computer.

    Non-OEM cannot be put on other PC, it is the operating system that comes with a pre-built pc like a Dell or HP, a lot of manufacturers do this thats why a lot of people are either building their own or having them custom built by puter specialist, so they can make changes to the system when they want to.

    Dom while your on i know it may sound stupid but how do i get the "THANKS" tab in the bottom right of my posts to enable me to either give or get thanks :)

    rusty see the thanks tab on the lower right. If you've logged on, its there... Unless an Admin is have a good one on you LOL
