Nice!....looks as though you have found the fastest RAM.

Although, in order to evaluate the fastest available for your system, we would need your mobo and other system specs!

1gig sticks will give you the opportunity to gain maximum RAM capacity!
    ie 4x512 = 2048mb or 4x1g = 4gig (4096mb to be technically correct)
However, other certain factors come into play as well, like dual channel ability etc

    Regards..

OK....these are basically your systems capabilities,

Motherboard: Intel 945G Express, FSB 800MHz
    Processor: Intel Pentium D (820) @ 2.8GHz
    PSU (Power supply): 270watt
    Cashe Mem: 2mb L2 cashe

    RAM:(512mb supplied) 4 gig Max capacity of DDR2 533MHz (PC2 4200) with dual-channel capabilities.

My advice for your new RAM configuration would be 2 x 1gig modules of DDR2 533MHz, good quality RAM, configured in dual-channel mode (ie 1 stick in the primary DIMM slot on bank A, and 1 stick in the primary DIMM slot on bank B).
The primary slots on each bank should be colour coded accordingly, and if in any doubt, please refer to your mainboard manual.

This setup should give your processor more than enough fast, data retrieval for the ultimate execution of just about any function you require your system to perform. I dont think you would see a massive benefit (performance wise) of going to the max of 4 gigs..
In relation to your processors performance that is!!

Check out the samsung 1 gig sticks.....very reliable, good quality RAM at a reasonable price, however a bit of hunting around could see you save even more!!

Would PC6400 RAM be too much for my CPU?

What about DDR3, will that be compitable with older computers. It will be out this summer.
