    Hi guys,
Another stupid question: I visited the arcade to see if I could give some of you guys a thrashing, but every time I click to play, I get a screen with this cute little sign in top left corner (see attachment). What does it mean? And what settings do I have to change to be able to play? Oh yeh, I'm running XP Home and IE 6.
    Cheers, Omigosh.

PS. Just in case I can't figure out how to send the attachment, the little sign is a small square, approx 0.5 cm, with a small red square inside on top of a blue triangle, and another little blue square to the side--if you've ever seen it, you'll know what I mean. Thanks.

Thats the unknown object symbol, and even if you have macromedia flash installed it might be a shockwave object, which you need to install seperatley. Try going to www.macromedia.com/shockwave .

Sorry Guys, I haven't been able to get back here since I first posted--boring things like work got in the way. I'll now follow up your leads, and report back. In the meantime, thanks for all your help.

    MORE FEEDBACK

I worked through all your suggestions in order, then visited the Arcade, but when I tried a game I got the same sign--the 'placeholder'. So here's some more info which may help you help me, please:-
    1. According to IE's Tools/Internet Options/Security Tab/Custom Level, my Active X setting are as follows:
    • Active X controls & plug-ins: enable
    • Download original Active X controls:prompt
    • Initialise & script Active X controls not marked as safe:disable
    • Run Active X controls & plug-ins: Administrator approved (that's me, by the way)
    • Script Active X controls marked safe for scripting: enable
Is there anything here I need to change?

    2. I followed the Macromedia link to download their Flash Player, and followed all instructions. The 'Security Dialog Box' did not appear, but when the Flash Player page came up--the one that says something like 'in a couple of minutes you should see a picture which shows that it's been downloaded OK'-- all I got was the 'placeholder' sign. I waited 5 mins, though I'm on ADSL, then closed page.

    3. I then visited the Shockwave site to download. This time I did get the 'Security Box', clicked OK, and download & installation completed successfully--I saw the picture!

    4. I visited Arcade and tried to play a game--any game, please--but all I got was the 'placeholder'.

Please put me out of my misery--and no, that's not an invitation to suggest euthanasia, even if I am one of those dreaded 'silver surfers'.

Thank Guys, look forward to hearing from you.

    Hi Robo,

Thanks for your advice. I went into I.E. Tools/Internet Options/ Security Tab and set everything to 'default'--same in the Advanced Tab. Then went back to Macromedia site and read all their help. Using their test page, I see that Shckplasyer installed OK, but FlashPlayer still shows the 'placeholder' sign. So, I downloaded their 'uninstall Flash Player utility' and used it just in case any remnants in my system, rebooted, downloaded their manual package onto my desktop then tried to install, but all I get is this 'placeholder' thing again. So your diagnosis seems right--it's all down to getting FlashPlayer up and running, but I don't know what's stopping it.

Anyway, I'll keep messing around with it, but personally I think it's a plot by you guys to stop me coming into the arcade and giving you all a thrashing!http://www.majorgeeks.com/vb/images/icons/icon7.gif

    Cheers, Omigosh.

    UPDATE: PROBLEM SOLVED--I THINK.

I found a recent Windows 'Critical' Update in my system for I.E.--Q831167-- which I removed using Add/Remove Programs, rebooted, and tried a stockbroker's site with a demo trading screen; it worked! I then came back to this site, entered Arcade, and tried Yeti; it worked! Went to Macromedia site, Test Page; both Shockwave and FlashPlayer work! So there you have it; the prob was M/softs 'Critical' update for I.E.--thanks, Bill. Maybe this info will help someone else in the same predicament.

In meantime, thanks to all you guys for help. Semper Fi, Robo.http://www.majorgeeks.com/vb/images/icons/icon13.gif

    Cheers, Omigosh.

Life's just a game, Robo, as you special forces guys know.

Actually I'm disappointed in the Arcade; I was looking for a game called STUPID, 'cos I reckon I'd be better at that than anybody else!

    Take care.http://www.majorgeeks.com/vb/images/icons/icon6.gif
