What's up with this driver?

I have the GeForce GTX 260M Version 295.73 graphics driver. One of my games claims it's not good enough saying the driver doesn't have Detonator 45.23. Normally I'd just try to update the driver and it'd probably work but in this case it's the newest driver Nvidia has that's compatible with this computer and the game in question is from 2003. Any idea why it claims a brand new driver doesn't have something that's 9 years old in it?

 

And, to add to David's remarks:

Some older games do have issues with newer driver packages. If this is a specific game problem, then you might consider rolling back to the recommended driver version temporarily. For example, I roll back when playing an old NASCAR sim because my new ATI drivers cause shader issues - nothing wrong with the card or the new software, it's just that the game was written for a certain set of (older) instructions...

Some legacy versions can be found at OldApps.com. Just make sure you have the newest GeForce drivers available so that you can re-install, and be advised that you might not get 100% functionality with the older software...

 

One more thing to add to the first two responses, and to augment DavidGP's post in particular - make sure you check for any available patches for the game itself that might correct the issue.

I had a problem along those lines with an older game, but a patch that was released addressed the issue.
