I want to mess with my hard drive a little, perhaps even formating it completely and of course I want to backup some files first.
Apart from my pesronal documents (photos, songs, work) what else do I have to backup so that I have to costumize as less as possible later?
I mean, can I backup my windows/games/program settings? And where can I find those files?
Just tell me of any file path that comes to your mind and you think that I should backup.

I have read something about these imaging tools, but I never needed to use one so if you have a reliable freeware to suggest it would be most welcome.

    Hi Sailor

Thinks like internet favorites, latest drivers, email account settings are good also, but on your question of imaging, I do love and prefer Acronis True Image but that is paid app, however a close freebie is XML Image

thx for the fast reply Halo.

About the internet settings, passwords etc. can I find all these things in the "Documents and Settings" folder?

Hi Sailor, sorry been away for a few days so catching up.

Acronis or DriveImage XML will clone/image the whole HD, but this freebie app should be able to cover all those backup locations Fabs Autobackup (its next on my list to install after coming across it earlier, so not tried it yet)

Yes the majority of personal files and your favorites are in the Docs and Settings user folder, also you can backup depending on what email app your using your emial settings from the application itself, in say OE, this is done via the tools > accounts then export feature

as for games you would need to check the games folder in program file or docs settings s for settings file ( sometimes an .ini file ), would suggest you check game makers FAQ or related forum for game for location of games settings if available for backup as some wont be.

On Internet settings, what connection type do you have? as if your like me and use a modem router to connect to your ISP the internet connection settings as in user/pass and settinsg are in your modem/router.
