What's Wrong With Mg Forum Servers Today?

Constant problems since last night with exceptionally slow loading; being frequently flipped over to the main MG files site, buttons such as 'alerts', 'edit' not working at all, or taking forever to work.

No such problems seen here. Maybe logging the problem times would help MA and the team pinpoint any issues?

Well it is still happening to me (in the UK) and only on MG forums out of about 10 websites (including two different email account sites, Facebook, two international media forums and Instagram) I'm constantly logged into, none of which display a single problem. No problems with service status with my fibre-optic ISP. So it clearly is a localised server issue on MG and no where else.

I am not seeing any issues. Have you tried a different browser?

It's possibly a routing issue, a traceroute should show that up.

    Clear the browser cache/cookies?

    Reboot?

    Change DNS servers?

Safe Mode with Networking (it would rule out most 3rd party software interference)?

I have not had it happen either. Everything is normal.

Things are normal here in Northern Canada.

On the laptop I was experiencing this issue, I had already carried out all the troubleshooting methods, including safe mode with networking and the problem still existed in any of 4 web browsers (Fx, Edge, Chrome, Opera).
I am now experiencing exactly the same problems on a different (desktop) system.
Flipping the focus to the standard MG site happens multiple times, and requiring about 5 attempts on average to either view a thread, or post a reply (the post button greys out, nothing happens, then it becomes bold again, click again and various messages some up saying 'server error' or 'you must wait 512 seconds to post again'), so for that to be happening on two different systems is bizarre. My ISP Tech Support, at the phone, suggested all the same troubleshooting steps and when informed it doesn't help they say there is nothing their end causing it, and it must be a server issue. Even though they suggested I run malware scans (which I had already done in safe mode) they doubted it was an issue as if so I would have trouble on other sites, which I don't.
But there you go c'est la vie!

It lets you know not everyone is having issues with MG.

If you're getting the same on 2x machines, Max, reboot your router/reset it to defaults, then change the DNS server and/or use traceroute.

Studying the Status bar on the browser(s) might also point you in the direction of the problem.

  11. MaxTurner

    MaxTurner Banned

I've done those three things already. Status bar shows the standard 'connecting to.......' blah blah and all the same issues apply.
On Wednesday I will be in a different location, on a different system, via a different router and different ISP and if it happens there too then I'm not wasting any more time.

It's often the specific 'blah - blah - blah' that points to the failure.

    Where are the traceroute logs?

  13. MaxTurner

    MaxTurner Banned

There was nothing in the 'blah blah blah' I'm just not going to type in full 'Waiting for forums.majorgeeks.com' or 'Connecting to forums.majorgeeks.com'

    This is interesting.
Mine is significantly slower and yet I have no problem with the forums.

It's a mystery. When I get to my other place on the opposite side of the city on Wednesday, it'll be interesting to see if it happens there.
It's causing such delays doing anything it's enough to make me want to spit!

Have you tried to clear out the Ipconfig in command prompt. If this gets to built up it will cause issues with my games a lot of times.

This is what i do Command prompt than ipconfig /release Than ipconfig /flushdns Than ipconfig /renew.

    This should work.

Thanks for that suggestion I hadn't tried it. I have now, but sadly no, it hasn't resolved the infinitely slow behaviour when logged in. When not logged in, I can whip around the forum threads with n0rmal speed. It is when logged in that all the problems start. 'Alerts' no longer shows a list, as it normally does when replies are in followed threads. And it takes many clicks on it to show the full list. Hitting 'reply' requires several attempts before it will show the quoted post to reply to. 'Post reply' requires several attempts with the button greying out, then becoming bold, then endless wait and 'red' warnings with a wait time as if I was trying to reply multiple times. Clicking on forum indexes frequently causes the browser (any of 4) to just flip to the non-forums MG page.
I have changed the DNS server addresses on each system, with no luck, then on the router itself, with no luck.
The fact it is not happening on any other web site when logged in is bizarre.
If it doesn't happen on either of two other systems at a different location in my city when I get there on Wednesday (different ISP) then it will seem to be specific to this location and ISP.

    Thanks to everyone for suggestions.

Most likely it might be your IP having issues.

I'm beginning to think so myself. I have now seen the same problems on two smart phones and a Kindle Fire Tablet- all connected by this WiFi.

Hey Max, a couple of years ago the company I work for had trouble accessing a couple of customer websites and these customers couldn't use the trade login on our site. Long story short our Sydney office ISP at "national level" blocked a range of IP addresses and put another range on a very low quota. This action caused sites to be unreachable or very slow system response and many timeouts. When our ISP was contacted at local level they knew nothing of any IP addresses being blocked but when the problem had gone on for several days and I threatened to cancel all services with Telstra, they then escalated my request and I spoke to a network engineer at Telstra (Australia's major ISP).
He then informed me they were having huge traffic problems caused by SPAM and trojan attacks coming from the IP ranges they had either blocked or restricted. Our customers in question had dynamic IP addresses and sometimes had an IP address issued in the ranges blocked or on quota. Telstra fixed it by limiting the IP addresses available to these customers and then making sure these ranges weren't on quota or blocked.
This is probably not your problem but I mentioned it because when we were first talking to our ISP they had no knowledge of the quotas or restrictions as these are done at a much higher level by their network security people (who often don't disclose their actions).

Thanks for that. I think I will speak with my ISP covering this location, which is Fibre Optic (to the cabinet at bottom of pathway and wired to the house) with Plusnet part of the BT Group (formerly British Telecom), especially if when on Wednesday at my other location I don't have the same problem there which is through Virgin Media (part of Liberty Global) via cable Fibre Optic.

Some ISP all so have monthly Cap as well.

Does your ISP have a monthly Cap like 255Gigs a data a month.

  23. MaxTurner

    MaxTurner Banned

Luckily no. I am on unlimited data usage with both providers. I am merely limited to the up to 50mb per second speed as I don't pay for the higher speeds. And their traffic management policies - which prioritise certain data use activities at the same time - can't be the current reason for this problem as it is simply internet browsing. I haven't been streaming anything while browsing, nor doing any file download/sharing, which I rarely do anyway. No one else has been here while I have been browsing to use the couple of smart TVs or other devices.
Very strange, very annoying and it's literally out of the blue.

If the cap was the problem then all websites would be affected ;)

Yes I did do that earlier yesterday on both the systems here in Safe Mode with Comodo AV, MalwareBytes and SuperAntispyware.
But would you believe it, now this morning using the forums logged in seems to have miraculously gone back to normal use. All the features are working exactly as they should.
It's very odd but I assume there were temporary issues in the tracing route. But a tracert log this morning looks about the same as yesterday.

I've had in the past some temp glitches that others dont experience on the forums, traceroute shows everything should be ok, last-time I kinda thought it maybe an errant advert as some flash based ones cause massive slowness on some sites for me at times, not on all browsers mind, so I tend to know what browser to use on some tech sites that cause issues.

BTW are you still getting these issues?

Fortunately it just went back to speedy normal, after about 12 hours!

Dunno the answer tbh and could have been a residual effect of BT having major outages in the past few weeks, engineering works in majorly affected areas could cause some issues, may gte an ok traceroute but when larger amounts of data is going through its bottlenecks.
