    have u installed any new software recently? if so then uninstall it in safe mode.

    if you havent then when in safe mode go to start then run then type in msconfig. then when in msconfig go to the start up tab and uncheck all the boxes and then restart.

    Could be your "Boot.ini" is corrupt extract it from your XP CD and replace it

    I'm not sure but, if the boot.ini was corrupt, would it be possible to boot into Safe Mode? confused:eek:

    That is a good idea, though. :)Maybe do a repair with the installation CD. confused

    to be honest im not sure what your on about and installation cd for what ? and will that mean everything is deleted from my computer?

    your boot.ini should read something like this

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    If it is corrupted your machine will not boot up properly if at all

    It is located at C:\boot.ini

    To fix boot.ini problem do this

    1. Boot with XP CD

    2. Press R to load the Recovery Console.

    3. Type bootcfg /rebuild

    The above example would start the step-through for the creation of a new boot.ini on the computer

    i have check what you said and i have all of this
    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP

    but i dont have this bit
    Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    what should i look for when i go to start, run then eventvwr.msc?

    also i saw another thread about a comp not starting and it said to use the read and run me first guide which i use any way if my comp messes up but i didnt think i had any viruses. It has found a few and i will post my logs in the malware forum to see if that helps but other than that i dont know what else to do.
    One thing i have noticed is my AVG firewall has stopped and keeps giving me errors.

    A Repair with the installation/recovery CD is probably the way to go as posted by zbd21 and SkunkWorks, but before you do anything else, I'm curious as to why you don't have the following:

    Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    What does your line show? confused

    Hold down the 'Windows' key and the 'Pause/Break' key at the same time. It should bring up System Properties,
    Select Advance
    Select Settings under Start Up and Recovery
    What does it say under 'Default Operating System' ?

    It could be malware related as Bugballou stated. You'll want to look at the errors that it will show, to help and decide if it's malicous or just some system error. But we would have to see a list of them. Hold off, on that for a minute.

    Just let me know what it says under 'Default Operating System'

    If no one gets back to you quickly, I recommend going here and following these instructions in the meanwhile, just do what you can in Safe Mode with Networking if possible:

    i did what you told me to and it says this for the default,

    microsoft windows XP home edition 'noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    it was blank at the end of this where it should have been

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP

    i also did that run thing and there were loads of errors
    when i was doin the read and run me guide it found a few things and it said virtumundo was found (ive had problems with that before) so could that be the cause?
    and in the guide it says to do some stuff in normal mode but it will all have to be in safe mode as i cannot get into normal mode

    Ok, you just have Home Edition instead of Professional Edition. Everything looks okay there. ;)

    Just do what you can in Safe Mode. :(

    The malware experts here would have to help you on that. But I've had serious problems trying to remove that particular one before. I've never seen it keep someone's operating system from booting normally (but that's just my experience).:eek:

    Someone else on here may have to help you with that one. When they recommended that, They're thinking they may be able to help you diagnose your errors and see if it is a system error and help fix your issue that way. I don't much experience there. :(:eek:

    ok thanks for your help i am now just waitin for help from the guys in the malware room :)

    Just remember your problem may not be malware related. But it may help to eliminate any issues caused by malware, especially now that you've discovered 'virtumundo' on your machine. :eek:
