When is a thread too old?

I'm asking the question "When is a thread too old?" because MA shut down thread http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=103521 after just one day when Candle_86 made a suggestion to the OPs problem. Admittedly MA had already come up with the same suggestion but to then say
just one day after the original post seemed a little harsh.

Yea I have noticed the same in the past, I just put it down to MA having a rough day, hey running a site is not the most calming thing to do, lots of idiots come out of the wood work on the net and dealing with them day in day out ain't easy, so I just figure that in, when things like you mentioned happen. You can also PM, M.A. with your concerns and he will get back to you, but he can be a bit rough and gruff at times just comes with the territory, right MA

OK I sort of agree with you. I know that MA probably has to deal with far more spam and dodgy posts than we will ever realise. It's just that Candle_86 had only made 19 posts and he/she might not make any more if that is the sort of response given.

But I would like MA (or any of the mods) to answer the original question "When is a thread too old?" or is it just dependent on the sort of day one has had? :)

Hey Yargwel I think if it bothers you that much it would be best to PM M.A. directly, he has always gotten back to me, not always agreed with his reasoning, but it is much better to deal with it there instead of belabouring the point here and having another closed thread, and an even more angry M.A. We have to always remember that both Jim/Tim ALLOW us to use this site. The costs of this site are born by the software/etc that is sold, the forums are just a plus for our pleasure. So please contact them on a personal level

I thought the title of this thread was a joke. I clicked on it to expecting to read the punch line.

I guess the punch line would be... when it pisses off MA.;)

Never for me depends on what sort of day I have, I leave home, work and personal stuff out of the equation, the same as I leave home stuff out of work. BUT dealing with spammers, people who blatently just post the same info just to increase postcounts etc can affect how one deals with a reported or noticed thread/post... we all be human and make mistakes sadly ( well I dont as I'm perfect ;) )

as to too old, well I think I go by a rule of thumb as to say 2-3 months-ish or dependent on wether the last post that resurects a thread actually adds some new information to the thread or basically repeats what has been said before, dictates wether I lock, delete or move in the case of a new member who posts they have the same issue as it maybe similar but not everyones hardware/software or issues are exact so if they post enough information on their issue as in PC specs, the issue and whats affected then I will de-merge that one post and pop it into its own thread or if no info is posted and a generic post of "Hi I have the same problem help" then I will generally pop in a nice message to start a new thread with all the relevent info, with a link to Before You Post Asking For Help, Please Read This

I have already de-merged one post today into its own thread, with a post on how to start a new thread and which forum to find help in for their specific problem.

Again we all be human and if sidetracked with other things, dates of threads may get missed and locked accidently, if you feel this has happened then a quick report a post and description of why you think its locked in error will help.

Thanks Halo that is fairly succinct.

So if anyone should feel any post has been locked out too quickly then you say
    - so should this be via a PM to a mod or the same way as spam or a bad post is reported?

Thats my personal viewpoint on how I handle threads/posts I come across, others may have a different take on it, but I'm sure we are all similar from what I notice on locked/deleted threads etc.

Either way should do.. but it will be very rare I'm sure that a thread has been locked like that one and I will leave MA to reply if he so wishes on that.

PMing or Reporting will not guarantee that a tread will be re-opened or undeleted tho, so be sure its an honest mistake or oversight before reporting/PMing :)

Cheers Halo (and is that a new avatar?) . I'll wait and see if MA has his own opinion or is happy to let this one slide. :)

Yes on Avatar and Siggy line ;)

Yes on MA..... but I hope I gave you insight into my rationale on old threads and the options I use?

The issue at hand was he responded to tell him to get a bracket, as I originally stated, until the thread starter explained how his case worked andf that brackets were not useable in this case. He was more interested in knowing if , quite simply, he could bolt up a hard drive on one side only.

So, what this guy did was read the question, ignore the answers, and the fact that it was resolved, and proceeded to repeat an already invalidated answer. Didnt get the point of that answer except boredom mixed with laziness.

OK MA I understood that it just seemed a little harsh closing the thread on that basis...but heck it's your site I'm only a humble servant.:)

Appreciate your opinion, what happens from here is more people start piping in and all for nothing, figured I would kill it now :)
