I know there's a patch or something by MS that identifies instalation programs that I can use to try to stop this. Is there something else I should do? Where can I find the MS application?

    Thank you

    Hi

What is the exact message that is being shown when you open Excel is it asking for the Office Cd or is it also listing a filename?

Does this happen when opening other Office applications?

Which Windows and Office version you using?

Have you tried Detect and Repair from inside Office, any office app and click Help > Detect and Repair ( Office 2007 is click the Orb and <app name> Options > Resources > Diagnose )

One thing to try if its asking for a file off the office cd is to un-hide all files ( in any folder click Tools > Folder Options > View and tick Show Hidden Filess and Folders ) as in most cases Office installs all its CAB pack files on your C drive in a folder called MSOcache and at times when you have just done an Office update, its looking for a specific file.

Method 7 below may help as its the Windows Installer Cleanup util

thanks, the message that appears is a box saying preparing to install. It seems to only happen in Excel.
