When was the last time you booted up a Windows 98 machine?

This poll needs the option "several years ago"...

And I'm curious as well. Why are we answering this question? Can't you afford to pay someone to do market research for you? :p

I dunno Mimsy, I could download win98 and others off MSDN (as dos is still listed for DL) but personally dont see the reason to run an older Win version unless I had a PC that could not handle the later versions, but as a technophite I always move forward and not backwards so if Win8 was available now I would be running it on capable hardware.

Dont run any Win versions past XP and no Office version past Office 2003 but this is me and I know others do like various versions of apps and Win versions so thats their choice, as none is wrong, run what you like.

A friend found a computer in the closet of a house he was moving into.
Brought it to me to check out for him.
Older IBM with a P2 CPU and something like 89MB RAM running 98SE on a 4GB(massive :-D) hard drive.
Don't know how long it had been sitting, but after blowing the dust out, it booted right up.

I had reason to load Windows 3.11 on a 486 the other day. A customer wanted some, (very) old C.NC. M-Code files that was only accessible on a 51/4" disk and 486. Win 98 - 'prolly about 6 months ago. Surprising how much really old computers are still running industry here. rolleyes

The purpose of this thread is just a mystery, though. :-D

Think in part Barry that is the reason MSFT still offer Dos 3.11 (and listed is DOs 3.1 and Does 3.2 dont see Win95 or 98 listed as they are not really corporate type Win versions) on MSDN and TechNet, its a legacy thing for corporate.

i've worked on 98 machines for clients and i keep a very old laptop running 98 for classic games that just don't wanna run in a dos box.

Most of the supermarkets here in the UK (from what I have heard) still run Windows 3.11 on the POS (Point Of Sale - Checkouts) systems, although their servers now run Win 2003 Server. And I can remember when I first started working for the largest supermarket chain in the country (Tesco) they still had a green-screen terminal for stock checking.:zzz

I grew up with 98 so I keep a VM of it so I can "relive the magic!" from time to time.

Nothing says great old games like win 98. Slow enough to run older games, fast enough to not frustrate you.

I guess I have to say Win98SE was a good OS and still hve the original disks, dont think I would have an occassion to need to install it tho, but never know, nostalgia prehaps.

Didnt know that on POS collinsl, did work on some systems for Boots the Chemist back many years ago, but never delved into the OS run.

I worked on a W98 laptop last year sometime, I quite enjoyed it. Just needed cleaning up but I have to say it was a bit weird and took me a while to remember where everything was lol

    I have a Win98 machine loaded, I just moved & thought
I haven't booted this in a year." But I kept it for games.. Revolt, Airfix Dogfighter.. I never have anyone call me with 98 problems any more, so she never gets booted.

    It's not market research, curiosity.

At work we have XP & are moving to Win 7... I have gotten a few calls to support 7 now and hate that I can't rattle off the clicks. I have to boot a system and look... ah change.
