Regular XP does not detect the HD - need drivers?

    Hi DomLuc,

Thanks for the reply, it looks like the generic XP disk I have from MS does not have the correct drivers (SATA?) for the laptop.

I understand that I need the HP specific XP CD for the laptop to be able to reinstall.

    Thanks.

in order to install xp on hd that has sata drivers you will need the sata driver on a floppy or flash drive. however i have the same issue at work and found a program that allowed me to slipstream the drivers onto a install cd along with sp3 and create a startup script so it is practically a no touch install. if you are interested i can post the solution i found that will make your install smoother

not so all it takes is a little planning and time. I run into this issue all the time. First download all drivers for system and burn them to a CD. Create your slipsteam install CD with the sata drivers, install xp, then using the driver cd install your drivers.

OK-I'll try building an XP Pro Install CD...Can you please provide the instructions?

    Hi Geminiione,

Yes - I would appreciate the instructions on how to do build an XP install CD for this laptop.

It does NOT have a floppy drive and I read about folks who have burned a couple of dozen CDs and still can't get the XP Install to run correctly.

I called HP support and they told me that they only had Vista CDs for the HP nc6320.

I'll try calling again on Monday.

BTW- if there are any HP nc6320 owners out there that could help me out - I would definitely appreciate it!!!!!

To install XP from a bootable cd with the sata drivers on it go to http://www.nliteos.com/download.html
I would suggest you read the guide on how to use it.

go to HP and download the drivers for your system. Burn those to seperate cd.

Now I don't know how much knowledge you have so I will write this as if you are reletivly new to this so don't take personally.
This program allows you do many things. First and most important you can create a cd with drivers you need for the sata drives.
If you are comfortable doing more you can slipstream SP3 into the image and also set your options such as CD Key and location etc. Once you have XP running put in your cd with the drivers and away you go.

I use this program at work as I find myself in the same boat with a lot of hardware. If you have any more question or trouble
let me know and I will answer as many as I can.

    Hi there TR15220,

There are a lot of fine people here to help you with your problems. Thanks for the input on this fine site everyone!

There is an easier solution to your problem though.

    - No slipstreamed disc needed (it always comes in handy though, so make one if you can, it saves you a lot of time when installing Windows, because it contains a lot of updates which are not included on the original XP release CD.
    - No SATA drivers needed
    - No floppy drive needed
    - No original HP installation discs needed

You do need to have the following at hand:

    - A Windows XP installation disc
    - A valid serial number for XP (usually found on the bottom of the machine in question)

What you willl need to do is the following:

    - Boot your machine and press F10 if prompted. This takes you to the BIOS setup of your system.
    - Use the arrowkeys to navigate to the appropriate menu-option; in this case
the System Configuration menu, followed by the Device Configurations menu item.
    - Here you will need to disable the SATA Native Mode by navigating to it with the arrow keys and pressing the right or left arrow key.
    - Press F10 to leave the submenu and navigate to File, Save changes and Exit to save your settings.

N.B. You are effectively putting the SATA controller in a compatible mode for accepting genereric ATAPI commands and sidestepping the more advanced options (like Native Command Queuing etc). This does not hurt the performance of your machine, so don't worry.

You can now boot from your Windows XP install disk (press F9 when prompted and you can select the boot device if the boot order is preventing booting from your optical drive) and Windows XP will recognize your drive.

    Good luck and enjoy!

    Kind regards,

    Vigoras
