You can't, even fi you could you don't have the hardware to run it.

Now if you speak of Linux that's different.

Yep, FreeBSD is Unix. The name Unix is owned, and you have to pay a company to be able to use the name with your OS. The most popular forms of Unix are Solais, which is made by Sun and runs only on their hardware, and IBM's AIX, which I know very little about.

BSD is the Berkeley Software Distribution that originates from the original design of Unix (a cooperation between Bell Labs and UC Berkeley, among a few others, IIRC). The BSD's are open source and free. Not just free to distrubute and modify as long as you stick to a liscence like Linux... 100% free. There is BSD code in all major operating systems today from Linux to Windows.

On the user level, GNU/Linux is nearly indistinguishable from Unix, and it has a much larger support base than any of the BSDs (Free, Open, Net).

I would probably go with Linux. It runs NetHack just fine. :)

Mandrake is probably the best desktop distro for new users, and it has a very large community around it.

What would be the best to do in a dual boot situation. run Linux or that FreeBSD? and is Linux the same as UNIX?does it use the same command structure?

I'd recommend Linux for a dual-boot system. Fedora Linux and Mandrake Linux seem to have a lot of success with it. I'm sure you can dual boot BSD, but I'm not sure how much trench work you'd have to do to get it done.

Is it the "same"? Sort of. It'll have sh, csh, and bash, if that's what you're wondering (not sure about ksh or tcsh). Most of them default to installing X (XFree86) and either KDE or Gnome (CDE clones), and they usually go right to it when you log on.

If you want to try Linux out, you can download a copy of Knoppix. That's a Linux distro that runs completely from a CD.
