Where do I find my hard drive specs?

    Hello,

Where in windows can I find the specs for my hard drive, like:

    1. Interface
    2. Spindle Speed
    3. Buffer memory (is this the same as write caching?)
    4. Latency

Can you find this information in Windows somewhere, or do I need to physically open it up (it is a regular internal hard drive that I bought a box for at the same time and the store put them together to make it a USB external hard drive) and find the printed info to determine?

Also, do most external drives that are sold and marketed as "external" use some cooling or fan device, or do they rely only on metal type and design for cooling? The reason I ask is I am pretty sure the box that contains the hard drive is not cooled in any way, and usually feels pretty warm to the touch. Since it has a switch maybe I am better off not letting it run 24/7 like I do my computer and the internal hard drives?

    Thanks for your help!

Just look up the specs of the make and model at the appropriate manufacturer's website.

Thanks for your help. I found all the specs on the maufacturer's website. It says Maxtor on the drive, but I guess they were purchased recently by Seagate, and the ID numbers all refer to a Seagate product which has been discontinued (hopefully not for any design flaw reasons).

I am still curious whether the drive needs to be cooled by a fan, or if I should try not to have the drive on constantly. Not sure if its more wear and tear to start up and shut down a lot, or stay running all of the time. Thanks again for your help.

Look it up on the Maxtor.com website. As for model# of the drive, post it. As for the cooling, unless the case has specific cooling for the drives, leave the case closed, and unmodified, and the components should be fine. If you are worried about the temp of the motherboard and drive, you can use Everest.
