Thanks. Where is it in the GUI?

In GNOME: Files => Other Locations => Computer => etc

    etcfiles.png

However, if you want to modify files in /etc, you need root access which is only available in terminal.

If I navigate to etc and then I navigate back up, the directory that I am in is different (it is no longer the folder with downloads, documents, etc). How do I get back to the folder that I started in?

The default directory is your home directory (/home/username/). You can go back to your home directory with cd $home

I highly recommend that you install Midnight Commander to navigate through your files in terminal:
    mc.png

    To install Midnight Commander:
    sudo apt-get install mc

Then you can run it with:
mc or sudo mc (for full root rights)
