Trying to resolve audio distortion issue in Windows Media Player. I want to rename this file to Ctmp3.bak in order to play mp3 files in the player without distortion.

Have you done an Advanced Search ( advanced covers hidden and system files ) of the OS drive do this file? < Click Search for Files and Folders > Search Options > tick Advanced Options and search.

or in Tools > Folder Options > View > check "show all hidden files and folders" > apply and search again

Thanks for the search tip...advanced search doesnt find the file in the pc...only the reference to it in this forum. Apparently it's not there. The tip in WMP FAQ was about finding it and renaming it to Ctmp3.bak, saying that the player isn't fully compatible with the .acm file, which is a Creative PlayCenter MP3 decoder. However whether its an MP3 or WMA file, distortion is still noticeable. Either file sounds great in Musicmatch Jukebox, and MP3 files are clear in RealPlayer.

" I've had a lot of problems with crashing VirtualDub because of the sound. Turns out the problem was (apparently) using the mp3 codec that came with the Creative sound card (ctmp3.acm).
Following instructions to block that codec I renamed it (by making it xctmp3.acm) and went through (on XP) Control Panel / Sounds and Audio Devices / Hardware / Audio Codecs / ctmp3.acm Properties / Do not use this codec.
I also said aloud "Do not use this codec." several times.

The Professional codec, which is installed (apparently) by WMP was also on the list, so Mp3's are playing."

Not mine ...this was a qoute.:)

If you have a Creative soundcard then search for a file in the system directory (winnt for windows 2000 - windows for windows xp) called CTMP3.acm and rename it to CTMP3.acm.bak and it fixed the problem for me.

    CLICK my computer > C: drive > Windows > system32 > ctmp3.acm > right-click to rename it

The ctmp3.acm is not listed in sys32 in my XP. Went into audio codecs properties, not there either, just Windows Media audio codec...among some others. Does this suggest then I have no solution w/o that .acm file?

RESOLVED! Simply turned off graphic equalizer in WMP...distortion in wma and mp3 files eliminated.
