Where'd My Post Go?!

like every 5 or 6 posts/replies i manage to accidentally hit something which takes me away from w/e thread i'm mid-reply to. which happens on other boards as well, but when i hit "back" (arrow) there, the unfinished post is usually queued up in the compose window. here it is blank.

    a) why the diff?
    b) any way to fix this? (i.e. site stop flushing cache of compose window!)
    c) what am i likely hitting? always startled to see the thread/compose window disappear!!

I wasn't making a joke. I would suggest you stop while you are still here.

ok, fair enuf. not a joke but a "koan". (if i'm googling that right)

anyone else have some insight on the actual ISSUE, tho? is it a board glitch, or some cache issue in my own browser?

using Edge these days. can't find any "about" button, so i'm not immediately sure of the version.

I suspect it has to do with cookies - both how the websites set them - persistent or not - and also how you set your browser to receive them - persistent or session only?

I allow MG cookies to be persistent on my browser just so I don't have to constantly sign in. As for a half written post, I notice that if I navigate somewhere else and back later, my incomplete post would still be there. But if I close the tab and reopen, then the post is gone. I suspect that cookie characteristic is set by the website. Notice how bank websites are a lot more stringent about ending sessions and erasing session data?

    on THIS board?

i notice that almost everywhere ELSE but not here!

but yes, that is EXACTLY the question i'm asking....

what am i tweaking, WHERE, to make that happen?

once again, typed a 4-paragraph question just now, only to have it all disappear b/c i accidentally hit something taking me away for 3 seconds.

It's browser thing. I just logged in with Firefox and started typing a response and then went to a different site on the same tab. When i came back my incomplete post was still waiting. But when I did exactly the same in Edge my incomplete post had disappeared. Guess it's a cookie thing.

yeah, i'm in edge these days. i'd tell u the version but i can't find any sort of "about" button/pulldown. some subset of "97", i believe.

i will accept that it's a cookie thing. but how/where do i TWEAK that?

I know you want a direct "how to" answer. But really, considering just how much we use our browsers today... take a bit of time and do some exploring / learning. Go to "settings", then "privacy and security", then "cookies and other site data". Scroll a bit and see what all the options are. Chrome/Chromium allows users to always keep selected cookies, always block selected cookies, and also to allow them but then to clear them out after every session. I use Firefox (not Chrome/Chromium) but I suspect your default is likely the third option. So every time you "accidentally" surf away, your browser figured you were done and it deleted your MG cookie - forcing you to start from scratch when you revisit "three seconds later". Maybe. Just do some exploring, googling, and asking. Hope this helps.

I'm not exactly sure why you think this was a joke. It is true and knowing Eldon, I'd imagine he was not joking as you have offered no information. Please stop with the snarky remarks to people. That is not what this forum is about. If you want help, please ask in a respectful way and ask in a succinct way with as much specific computer information as possible. We don't need all the anecdotal stuff you have in there. You should have mentioned your browser in your first post.

Edited to change post to say that Edge does not seem to support saving content (at least on Major Geeks) in the event you navigate off the page....either accidentally or on purpose. The below quote from Earthling is the same for me. If there is a setting, maybe someone who uses Edge will come along. In the meantime, I'd suggest you use another browser for Major Geeks.

As has already been said you do need to take a little more time exploring / learning. This is in the Edge ... menu -

When I type a post, every 1 minute or so, I see a faded grey pop-up in the bottom right corner 'Draft saved'. I can leave and return the next day and my incompleted post will be there.

FWIW... I use Dolphin browser on a 6-year old mobile phone with Android 5. The only cookies setting is 'Allow', or not.

what thu...?? i have been on the DEFENSIVE against snarky comments since the thread started!

zebra and earthling and a couple others seem to have no problem understanding what i was asking. but a couple of the others keep asking very ODD questions...if not trolling, then certainly..."odd"....

where were u (and earthling) about 17 posts ago?!

so, unless someone finds otherwise, it is flat-out HOPELESS then, huh?

i used to use FF. perhaps time to go back.

i will repeat, tho, that it DOES save such posts on most other sites.

so the question remains: what is significantly diff on MG to cause this?

And yet, some of us have already indicated to you that our half-written MG posts DO remain even after we click to surf somewhere else and come back (within the same tab). So... which is more likely?

    1. MG 'deviously' plants different cookies onto different user devices - such that our posts remain while yours don't? Or...
    2. Our own browser cookie settings and extensions result in our differing experiences with the same MG website?

yes, i've already agreed to that! those of u not using edge have no problem, even on MG!

those of us using edge have no problem anywhere else, just here on MG.

so i'm curious what is it about MG's coding which makes it the "edgeslayer"?

I missed the part about Edge. I stand corrected. Knew there was a reason why I opted to gut out Edge from my Win 10 OS. Indeed, the exorcism was so successful that when I tried later on to reinstall Edge (to give it a second chance), it wouldn't install anymore...

i was very very used to FF on my prior PC. this one came with edge so i'm giving it a try.

other than this glitch HERE, i haven't seen too much diff.

iirc, the ability to save webpages in a SINGLE FILE (mhtml?) is what kept pulling me back to IE. i wanted to be solid Team FF, but i hated saving things as "index+folder" clusters. so i ended up divided between FF and IE about 50/50.

(affairs with opera and safari were short-lived...)

edge seems to have the same "single file" option as IE, so that's one point in its favour.

"losing every effin thing i ever typed to a forum"...one point against.

You can now copy/paste a webpage -- either the visible part on your screen or the entire webpage -- natively, on FF. Or download as a .png (pic) file, which you can view/edit with most any photo app. And there are other apps that can convert the .png file to .pdf file.

ur first sentence there, does that ALSO mean copy/paste it as an IMAGE?

not too interested in that. i wish to save the ACTUAL CONTENT (whence i could cut/paste, etc), a la MHTML.

nothing wrong with index + folder full of stuff, i guess, but it just annoys me. aesthetically.

    BIG NEWS.

today i had a "reply" to something half-typed -- pretty long actually -- when i a) accidentally closed the tab, b) accidentally closed edge, and c) accidentally rebooted the computer. [kids: don't drink & type!]

to my amazement, when the PC came back up and i clicked "reopen closed window" (followed by an extra "reopen closed tab"), THERE MY REPLY WAS!!!! what thu...??

yet, 20 mins later i closed a tab where i was composing an unrelated fresh post, and, yeah, as usual it was gone upon reopen.

from which we can conclude: a) edge does not keep caches of post windows (as we'd already established), but b) edge keeps caches of REPLY windows!!

WTF? i am dying to hear theories on what the diff is here!
